I agree with the general sentiment - Civ4 got my vote but I've got very fond memories of SMAC, and its atmosphere.

No Civ game has had the same feel as the original. There was just something about that game I can't put my finger on...

That being said, Civ 4 is the best, most balanced game of the 4. With Civs 2 & 3, after playing a few games, ideas started floating through my head on ways to improve the game. That hasn't happened for Civ 4. There's not much to improve.

I am happy to be the one and only to have voted for CtP2 thus far.

Though I think that Civ4 is really an excellent game (unlike Civ3), I still prefer CtP2, and especially the Apolyton Edition, because of many features that would be too long to detail here.

              I did.

I voted for Civ3 over 4 because I went for the one that has had the most impact over my gaming life. Sure I prefer Civ4 to Civ3 now, but...

Civ1 was great at the time, but I never really did everything I could have / should have with that game. Civ2 was OK, but I only had that for the Playstation and it never felt right on that system. I bought SMAC, but never really gave it a go. CTP2 was great, had some really good aspects to it, but could have been better. Civ3 was the first of the series that I really got into and played to death. Sure it has its faults, but so does Civ4, which I'm not liking at the minute as its starting to feel linear. Every game I play seems to be very similar lately, so I'm not finishing them. Found religion, build 4-5 cities, build army, attack neighbour, take a few cities, recover economy and technology, build army using next series of weaponry, attack neighbour, recover economy and technology, build next series of weaponry, attack neighbour.... and so on. I know there's other ways to victory, but space race is a bit of a cop out, cultural is a bit dull as it's more or less just defending, diplomacy is a waste of time and time is just a non-event.

Perhaps I'm just looking at Civ3 with rose-tinted glasses, but I did like it a great deal at the time. More than I love Civ4 now.

I think all versions have their strenghts and weaknesses, But I think that Civ 4 is the least formulaic by far. Earlier versions only had one way to victory (expand like crazy, then kill your opponents). Civ 4 is much more than that

would you say that Civ4 has more complexity than Civ2/AC/Civ3 had?

Civ4 compared to Civ3 is SOMEHOW (i dunno why) like Rainbow Six Lockdown compared to Rainbow Six Ravenshield (or lets better say Rogue Spear)
Or like Eurofighter Typhoon (TFX 3) compared to EF2000 (TFX 2)

I have no clue why I'm thinking like this. I never thought like that while playing Civ2/AC/Civ3.

                  greetings,

                      Indeed

I liked CtP2 also. But Civ1 was better, as was Civ2.

Civ4 definitely has more strategic complexity than Civ2 or Civ3. It has about as much or maybe slightly less than SMAC, but it's much better balanced the SMAC. And the AI is better beyond comparison.

That's the only reason why I stopped playing SMAC. After playing with Civ 4 for awhile, I just couldn't bear the AI in the game anymore. It just seemed really, really stupid.

It seemed really stupid even back then, before Civ4 .

Pretty pointless poll considered where it is! Many people here can't remember Civ and Civ2.

It doesn't really matter though because overall Civ4 is the best game, but then it damn well should be. Civ2 & SMAC are pretty close for games that are so old.

                              CTP should get negative votes.

Definitely! It really shows that they've been working on the AI and the whole concept. I don't think there's a stone they left unturned on this one

It really bugged me in the beginning, when I saw the screenshots and animations. But when I bought the game it looked sooo nice, and every objection I initially had melted like ice on a hot stove...
