Civ 4, hands down! I love AC, but it hasn't a prayer against Civ 4...

Why must you make me choose between CIV and SMAC .

CIV is a far better game.

But SMAC has the best atmosphere.

Yeah, the atmosphere of SMAC is unforgettable...fantastic. But civ 4 is the better game IMO...I think this is what people long for, a combination of the two. But now the storyline of SMAC has been done, we are all used to it. I don't know if a SMAC 2 would work...although it would be interesting. Perhaps a cool idea for a mod!

Civ4. It's simply a better game than any other Civ game. Civ4 also has good atmosphere, but it can't compete with SMAC in that regard - in fact, I don't know any strategy game that can.

It's just that this answer is so obviously right that everyone has to state it .

                            CTP, easily.

For me, CTP was my third "Civ" game after Civ I & II, and ever since then, it has always intrigued me as not the most "well-made", but the most innovative, creative, and most different game in the entire genre. The reason for this was how it, unlike Civ I, II, III, IV, was willing to go into places like terrorism, slavery, and the future while Sid Meier was only content to bring to us the "PC" version of history, not the dirty, discontenting reality that it was.

Sure, it was notoriously difficult for beginners to grasp and understand and it had huge management problems later on in the game (don't even get me started on the implementation of "space"), but through it all, unlike the other series, it truly allowed the leader to play virtually any style he wanted.

I mean, you could go from collecting slaves, collecting tithes, peacefully building science cities, not-so-peacefully razing cities, detonating nuclear bombs in cities, to bombarding cities from outer-space, to ultimately reclaiming the land from cities in a single game. It was all up to you, and for me, that is what any good Civ game should be, a totally different experience each time decided by you, not the game producer.

If this was a multiple vote poll, I'd vote for both Civ4 and SMAC easily. Civ4 for the gameplay and SMAC for the setting or atmosphere as everyone seems to recognize it. They're my two favorite games of all time. There's also a chance I'd also add a third place of Civilization II to the mix. It takes less effort from the computer and still makes a great classic game.

In this one-choice poll, I'll probably wait and see whether to vote for Civ4 or SMAC. I'm inclined to possibly vote for whichever of those two has fewer votes, which currently appears to be SMAC. Perhaps I'll check up on this thread tomorrow.
