Apologies if someone's gone over this already, could not find an existing thread...

In CIV3 it was possible to have a city governor manage "mood" only... which is, it would leave the default choices for placement of citizens on resource squares, and allocate just enough entertainers/specialists to overcome a revolt, if possible.

In CIV4, I notice there is an automated citizen option that is on by default... except it doesn't seem to assign entertainers at need. Is there a way to make it do so, or am I forced to assign entertainers manually now?

Entertainers? Do you mean artists? AFAIK, the automated governor will allocate specialists in response to the situation. For example in a recently captured city, with a lot of population and not much land, it will assign as many artists as it can. Unless you are running Caste System, there will be a limit on how many specialists of a particular type you can run, based on buildings. In my experience, the governor sometimes follows your approach - if you allocate one artists, the governor will make your next specialist an artist as well. However, the governor seems to have a preference for scientists, engineers and merchants.

BTW, in Civ 4 you cant turn an unhappy citizen to happy by the use of specialists. But unhappy citizens don't cause revolts - that depends on the amount of your culture in the city.

So much to learn... I'll have a closer look, but it appeared to me that the automated governor was assigning no specialists at all. But I was looking for them in the wrong situation, I'll check again.

Particularly in Warlords v2.08, the AI is quite good at using specialists, and uses them extensively.

If you're having happiness problems, there are a few good solutions (look in the strategy area for more)

        1. SLAVERY Many people play slavery as a happiness-provider, instead of the opposite ... they 'whip' (rush production with population) on a regular basis intended to keep their city at the highest population it can afford without having an unhappy person in it.

        2. Religion.

        3. Drama -> Manage the Culture slider. Culture slider is like the old Luxury slider, but more useful since you can't add entertainers
