I have played two games since the patch and was able to pull off the CS slingshot both times. Both as Inca at Epic speed on Monarch and both I did some early quecha agression to get some cities. I also managed to make a GS for the academy as well.

The first was my normal tiny map loaded with 7 ai's (I know, don't bother getting on me about that) and I did not get any free techs from huts. I did cherry pick my start by restarting until I got a spot with a gold hill by a river with several flood plains.

The second one I tried a standard map with just one extra civ. Similar start, city founded on a gold hill on a river. For those that have not tried it you get to start with 12 or more commerce that way. Put an oasis nearby and you are at 14 from turn 1!

I don't think the stategey is dead, just not as easy as before. You really have to pick your civ and your starting location if you want a shot at it. Before the patch I would see about 1 in 6 starts where the computer beats me to oracle playing this way. I am not sure how it will work now since I have only tried the two games.

One thing I do know is that if you play it pasive early on you won't make it. You have to conqure your second city. Preferably one that is in an awesome location. Quecha's on Monarch are very nice. Don't build workers early, steal them.

I'm playing Blake's latest mod tonight on Large/Continents/Prince/Marathon and so far managed to get the CS Slingshot plus most of the early wonders. I was playing the Incas with a nice starting location. Founded on a plains hill surrounded by rivered grass/flood plains. Only special was a grassland corn by a river. Total of 3 plains hills in my fat cross.

City 1 - worker, quencha x4, whipped settler, whipped terrace, whipped library, Oracle, whipped settler, popped GS/Academy, whipped forge, Pyramids, whipped aqueduct, Hanging Gardens, Great Library, Chichen Itza, Ankor Wat

City 2 (copper, horses) - worker, terrace, whipped settler, Great Wall, whipped forge, Parthenon

City 3 (stone) - work boat, whipped terrace, whipped worker, lighthouse, whipped forge, Great Lighthouse, whipped worker, Colossus

      City 4, 5 - whipped terrace, whipped barracks, archers/macemen

AI built Stonehenge and Temple of Artemis

I was behind in tech til I completed the CS slingshot, then researched Alphabet and traded for everything I skipped. Was ahead in tech from then on. AI has founded most of the religions so far. I got CoL/Philosopy first.

From what I've noticed so far, the AI builds massive cities now but is a bit slow on wonderbuilding, probably due to the high food focus. If I had access to marble I probably could have snagged all of the wonders.

It seems that you should be advancing one diff level up..

            One way:

Send a few military units prowling.
Find a civ with a worker laboring away on a tile on the edge of their cultural border.
Park your units next to the worker, but outside their cultural border.
            Declare war.
Step across the border and capture the worker.
Survive any counter attempt to rescue the worker.
Escort the worker home past lions and panthers and bears. (Oh my!)
Fend off any units that may come at your cities in a counter attack.
Negotiate for peace after 10 turns.
            Enjoy the new worker.
Enjoy even more the fact that the other civ has lost so much development power in the early game.
            Repeat as possible or advisable.
            If you aren't confused,
            You don't understand.

so do you usually end up having to exterminate the civ you declared war on to avoid having them as a constantly hostile civ? I haven't had any war in my few civ games yet. I'm not sure if this is because I'm playing the default cheiftain skill or simply because of random circumstances between the AI civs causing them all to calculate that war with my civ would be undesirable.

Does declaring war on a civ cause a set negative modifer the way having the wrong relgion seems to? Maybe -50 or something?

                Yes, you get a
you declared war on us -

even after you've made peace with them 10 turns later. And usually a few extra dollars later

I'm guessing that gives about the largest single modifier to relations in the game?

                    No, just a -3

And a few -1 among other civs who liked your target.

Does it also give a plus one for those civs that are always demanding you mistreat the target civ?

no only with those that were at war with you at the same time. During the war that bonus is pretty strong but after peace is made it quickly shrinks to +1 or completly disappears.

my favorite is the one when you're actually at war with them.

                          Something like
-6 This war is ruining our relationship.

                          NO **** Sherlock.

Do they ever get worse than furious? I had more than negative 20 in total adjustments with the french by the time they found themselves with nothing but a single flyspeck village left to their name after declaring war on me. I had figured they'd be a bit worse than furious at that point.

Furious is the lowest described relationship.
In the relationship described, they'll probably still be furious with you after they capitulate to you.
