one thing I really do worry about in MP is that I'm very, very competitive. not that I get angry when I loose, i don't but against the AI, I'm pretty ruthless. I don't know that I wqould like the image i would protray if I was as ruthless against really people. Perhaps I'm the only person who feels that way?

MP is a far different animal than the good ol predictable AI. You will find that most players are pretty ruthless too (although I will personally not break an agreement once its made), and far more creative at causing you heartburn than the AI.

I used to get really mad when I would lose a game, but almost a year of playing CIV online has taught me some humility and I no longer expect to win every game I start now, and am unfazed by losses. (of course some outrageous bad luck in combat or wonder whoring will still have me shouting at my screen somtimes)

Where do you g to get into one of the games?

In general I would probably play with you guys since I've at least "seen" you here. (I used to play Halo online I I prefered to play in groups of people I knew rather then just random internet folks)

If you have ICQ it's easier because when you see us on line you can check in. You can also post interest in the MP forum in the thread bearing my name.

We prefer people playing quickly but don't use a timer because some turns just take a little longer.

Stack combat and animation off will usually keep the game moving.

All are welcome, because the more the merrier.

Civ is just not a good multiplayer game, the REAL test of skill in a civ game is where each player has enough time to make the decisions he wants to make each turn. Quick and fast games only prove certain people have a limited subset of skill in one particular category.

The fact is civ multi with time limited turns is just about learning quick-judgement habbits, people who process information slower are at disadvantage in time limited games, it doesn't mean they are stupid, it just means they need more time to assess the situation and make decisions then other 'fast win' players.

Next you'd have to play custom maps with equally distributed everything if you wanted to control for luck and other fudge factors.

You want a game that really test's one's skill try Starcraft, civ 4 is simply not the pinnacle of competitive gaming.

Skill in civ is beating an equally good opponent from a disadvantaged start, this can be done in Multiplayer, but only if you can convince someone else that your equal is a juicier target, or you're an unappatizing one.

Be a poisonous toad to the other birds of prey, look pretty, but be unappetizing if they bite you Then kill someone's capital and play with 2 empires

4 things

1) The only other name I have ever had is Illuminatious.

2) From what I see this is a message board filled with nothing but newbies with the occasional apperence of an ok player.

3) If any of you end up becoming good at this game my lobby name is mrgametheory, come challenege me to any game you like, any settings. I am interested in finding people who think they are the best in a specific setting. I doubt I will find any on this board, so if any two/ three of you wanna join forces for a 2v1-3v1 thats fine also.

4) I am holding $250 cash tournament with no entry fee every single month, if any of you end up getting good at this game come sign up for the tournament.

BTW, I'm no shirk at Civ4 (can now beat second top level) and played quite a few MP games during beta, but if there's someone you want to play, find Aeson. I've seen him come in to take over an AI I was at war with and about to knock out, and he beat me, and pretty much everyone else. If I'd had just one more turn I woulda won. *shakes head*

edit: even 24 is pretty ridiculous. This is a strategy game.
