I'll second this (or third it or fourth it, as the case may be). The 1000AD scenario does have some colonization aspects to it, but the biggest problem with that, as well as the Terra map in the regualr games, is that the AI just doesn't 'get' the benefits of colonization. If you *know* its coming, and you know that Astronomy is the lynchpin, you can pretty much dominate the new world -- the AI sends a couple of settlers but they never really go for the land-grab necesary for their to be an impact. Simialarly, they don't save their Forbidden City for the New World then chop rush the thing in a captured barbarian city, etc etc.

So my 'Other' is a qualified "Yay! Colonization!" with the caveat that it would probably only be worthwhile in MP.

The new world from 4000 BC to 1490 AD, prior to the arrival of the European predators. (Ends in 1490 just as regular civ ends in 2050.) This would allow for both more nomadic elements and settled cultures, at least initially. Completely different tech tree (no wheel, no horses, no iron or metal working). This would be genuinely fun, and still historical.

I envision an almost empty world with little fragments of civilizations clinging to life. Most of the world is in ruins or under some sort of nuclear fallout or other contamination.

Civs start with tidbits of surviving tech, but have to work their way back up with new techs that revolve around their current sitiuation.

I think an Ashoka ("Asoka" ) scenario would be cool, not least because we already have the leaderhead.

He started out as a bloodthirsty warmonger, annexing and/or vassalising his neighbours, and then fought a hugely bloody and heavily eulogised war with the Kalinga proto-democracy on the East coast. After he witnessed the slaughter he'd caused, he renounced war, devoted his life to non-violence, and sent missionaries out to all corners of his by-now vast empire and abroad (Sri Lanka was Buddhist-ised by his missionaries), and erected monuments and rock-edicts throughout the country with his moral/legal code. He set it up quite nicely for a Civ4 scenario.

He also founded the secret society of the Nine Unknown Men

What was the diplomatic situation after he renounced war? Could a scenario be constructed where you have to try and hold together an empire and hold off angry civs without going to war?

A scenario like Bismarck trying to prevent war in Europe after Germany's unification.

The dynasty lasted only 50 years after his death. His great-grand-dad, Chandragupta was the one who made the Mauryan empire large.
