Civ 1/2 spaceships had basically 3 types of parts: Structurals, Modules, and Components. There were three types of Modules (Habitation, Life Support, and Solar Panel) and two types of Components (Thruster and Fuel), but only one type of Structural. You could build anywhere from 1 to 4 Habitation Modules which represented the number of colonists you were sending on the spaceship, but you needed a matching Life Support and Solar Panel Module for each. The more colonists you sent, the higher your score, but the heavier (and slower) your spaceship.
The Components had to be built in pairs: one Fuel Component for every Thruster. As far as I remember, you could build up to 8 Fuel/Thruster pairs. Each Component pair you built cut down on the amount of time it would take to reach Alpha Centauri.
Finally, the Structurals were necessary to support all the other parts. The more Module sets and Component pairs you built, the more Structural parts you would need. (I forget the maximum number of Structurals you needed for a fully-loaded ship.)
Once you built the size of ship you desired, you could launch it. You could make a fast ship (with the maximum number of components, and just one set of modules). You could make a fully-loaded ship which would be slower, but worth more points on your final score. Or whatever. The mix of size and speed was up to you.
Unlike Civs 3 & 4, once you built and launched the ship, you would have to wait for it to arrive at Alpha Centauri to win. If, in the meantime, someone else built and launched a faster ship, they could have a chance of beating you. On top of that, if your capital city was captured, you would lose your spaceship and have to build your ship from scratch. So, guarding your capital was very important for the space race victory. Of course, you could also capture enemy capitals to keep your opponents from winning as well.
