Civ 1/2 spaceships had basically 3 types of parts: Structurals, Modules, and Components. There were three types of Modules (Habitation, Life Support, and Solar Panel) and two types of Components (Thruster and Fuel), but only one type of Structural. You could build anywhere from 1 to 4 Habitation Modules which represented the number of colonists you were sending on the spaceship, but you needed a matching Life Support and Solar Panel Module for each. The more colonists you sent, the higher your score, but the heavier (and slower) your spaceship.

The Components had to be built in pairs: one Fuel Component for every Thruster. As far as I remember, you could build up to 8 Fuel/Thruster pairs. Each Component pair you built cut down on the amount of time it would take to reach Alpha Centauri.

Finally, the Structurals were necessary to support all the other parts. The more Module sets and Component pairs you built, the more Structural parts you would need. (I forget the maximum number of Structurals you needed for a fully-loaded ship.)

Once you built the size of ship you desired, you could launch it. You could make a fast ship (with the maximum number of components, and just one set of modules). You could make a fully-loaded ship which would be slower, but worth more points on your final score. Or whatever. The mix of size and speed was up to you.

Unlike Civs 3 & 4, once you built and launched the ship, you would have to wait for it to arrive at Alpha Centauri to win. If, in the meantime, someone else built and launched a faster ship, they could have a chance of beating you. On top of that, if your capital city was captured, you would lose your spaceship and have to build your ship from scratch. So, guarding your capital was very important for the space race victory. Of course, you could also capture enemy capitals to keep your opponents from winning as well.

Well said Xorbon, though I think I'd make it shorter:
      It was fun.

Additionally, you had a boost to your spaceship speed if you had researched fusion (could make a difference when someone launched before you).

Come to think of it, the space race due to time should be moddable in civ IV?

I wanted to be thorough because people who've never played Civ 1 or 2 wouldn't know what they were missing otherwise. Since playing Civ 3 (and now Civ 4) I feel like the space race is pretty bland.

(Though, it is funny how the latter ships look similar to the one in the cheesy movie "Flesh Gordon". )

Flesh Gordon was the porno version. Is that really the movie that Firaxis modeled the spaceship after??

well the civ 3 ship defiantely does look like a giant penis with balls, its quite amusing. Couldn't have been done by accident I would imagine

Ion Propultion, however, gives you the chance to get back. all you have to do is set up a colony inside the space craft.of corse you will need trees and an ubundance of water. this makes more people .It may take 3 generations of kids in a colony to do this but the scientific recerch may be invaluable.

just wanted to clear that up.

Hmm... You do know that in the Civ series you don't send explorers but colonistsi to AC? So it dosen't realy matter if they can get back.

Oh, and by the way they are in cryostasis so there is no need for a generation ship.
I'm not buying BtS until Firaxis impliments the "contiguous cultural border negates colony tax" concept.

I have to admit, the banana thing is getting old. Down with bananas.

I only put it in my polls out of peer pressure.

Those were the days! You had actually a chance to beat your opponent with a faster ship even if you launched it later, or you could throw all your army to their capital hoping that their spaceship will be destroyed. You had actually something to do in the lategame!
