  • Realistic spaceship?

I was just wondering wich spaceship you found most realistic in the Civ series and especialy how realistic you find the cIV spaceship.

    Personal opinions:

civ- before my time, only played out of curiosity never wone a spaceship victory.

civ2- looked sily, didn't recuire hibernation and could be fission povered but it was custimizable and it could fail

smac - looked cool and had a nice classical fusion drive none of that "ion drive" or "solar sail" stuff. Was launched at 2050 not 2020 or earlier like civ2

civ3 In my personal opinion the worst. Launched from the planets surface? And the ion drive and solar sail stuff, I mean we are going to AC it's 4 light years away would a solar sail or ion drive get the nesecary acceleration to get there in 40 years?

Realisticy while your expensive ship (that is so efficient that it can lift its self entirely on its own to orbit) that has a fancy but eficient ion drive wich could take centurys to accalerate to the desired speed (but consumes little fuel), could easily be beaten by roug orbitaly assembeled, fusion driven ( with a constant 0.1 c speed) rival ship. By the time your NASA-style overcomplicated monstorsity arived the competition would have been on the planet for decades would have discovered at least intelectula integrity and doctrine initiative and planet busted your colonists into oblivion

civ4 Better, Fusion power is once again a precuisite (even if only as a power source), its built in orbit (but its strangley aerodynamical and apart from the one missing booster rocket neary identical to Civ3's ship). The big I would give is the similarity to Civ3; it seems to have nearly identical civilopedia entrys!!?

I'm not buying BtS until Firaxis impliments the "contiguous cultural border negates colony tax" concept.

    phallic shaped spaceships.

They are all the same to me. Just a means to an end. I still have fondest memories of civ2 though.

I liked Civ2's spaceship the best, where you actually had some strategic choices to make (cost vs. speed once launched).

I seem to vaguely remember in Civ one that you could also customize the ship, and could send more or less settlers, although the actual number of colonists had no bearing on victory or score IIRC.

This has nothing to do with civ but I thought you should know... Ion propultion is there ti get you there and back. The original rokets of today CAN get you to a place faster but has no means of getting you back. which Is the worst thing to tell your astronauts. (some General) "Boys, You wont be comming back, BUT, you will benifit science untill that extremaly powerfull space-telescope is buit .... WOW reeeealy nice to say to a guy when he'll eventually die of old age or lack of o2 which will make a lot of people say "Nuts to this"

Ion Propultion, however, gives you the chance to get back. all you have to do is set up a colony inside the space craft.of corse you will need trees and an ubundance of water. this makes more people .It may take 3 generations of kids in a colony to do this but the scientific recerch may be invaluable.

just wanted to clear that up.

I liked the spacerace victory in both Civ 1 and Civ 2, but never in Civ 3 and Civ 4
This space is empty... or is it?

If I could vote for both, I'd choose Civ1 and 2. I liked the original premise (plus the number of colonists), and the chance at failure. I've never played SMAC, so unfortunately I'm stunted when it comes to voting for it (or knowing what people are talking about when they mention it).

BTW, where's the standard "banana" voting option?

in smac you don't actually send a spaceship. It's just part of the original "story".

I loved the Civ1 version, it was much better than the successors in that respect. But realistic? It certainly wasn't that.

Why must some moron always lament the absence of the banana option?

If we are talking about the concept "spacerace victory" then I have to say that CIV 1 by far has the most intresting spaceship. Mainly because of the fact that the
ship was highly customisable. If you were desperate, you could still launch a half-built ship but the possibility of reaching Alpha Centauri first was minimal.

Don't remember what the spaceship was like in Civ2.

You should really merge civ I and civ II here, since the spaceship race was exactly the same in both games (graphics being different though).
Civ 1/2 was by far the best spaceship victory in all civ games. In particular it was really a race. When the Chinese sent their ship in 1967 scheduled to arrive at AC in 1992, you could try to beat them by putting more components (fuel and engines) on your ship. OCC needed a minimal number of spaceship parts while still being fast enough, and after you had sent your ship you could build some spies and try to sabotage your opponents'.
In comparison, Civ 3 and 4 spaceships are just totally crap.

Actually I find it pretty strange that the CIV 3 ship actually has some votes

I don't even remeber the spaceship in Civ3. I nearly always died early or won that game by domination. I think that it was static, like in Civ4 (meaning it was the same set of components every time).

I clearly remember some space races from Civ2, demonstrating that the variable space ships add to the experience.

Can someone explain, for all of us who never played Civ1 and 2 what the difference was between the 1/2 ships and the 3/4 ones?
