I find that on Marathon the game's a hell of a lot easier because warmongering is so much more of a focus.
When I want to play a bit more of a builder game I'll play on Epic.

"Easy" has nothing to do with score. Easy is about winning at high difficulty levels. If you choose a low difficulty level, or construct a map that's easy to win for other reasons (like one opponent on a duel map), then, of course, you can get high scores in all sorts of ways.
I play on quick, and Vel, BTW, the reason Firaxis won't make the standard game that long is because it would be a death sentence to MP. Then again, with some people logic never seems to be a good enough reason...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

If Marathon were the default speed (which I don't think is a good idea), how would that affect MP at all? People can still play MP at whatever speed they prefer.
Epic. I dislike normal speed because, as a builder, there isn't enough time to get all those nice buildings up in my mega cities. Epic seems nicely balanced as new military techs give an edge but not necessarily one that can get your civ wiped out overnight.
I can't really get into marathon - the very early game just goes too slowly.

Marathon makes the game way too easy, unless you push the difficulty up 2 notches, which then gets annoying in other ways.
Push it up, play for real. Take a chance at actually losing.

I used to play at standard speed for a long time. I switched to epic for the last 20 games or so and liked it better. However, the games are long enough at epic, I don't even want to try marathon.
BTW, since a lot of people like marathon for SPgames, I will try that sometimes.
well i should imagine this vote is skewed based on the predilection of residents of this site, that and it has no quick option
The results so far have surprised me - there are more players who like the slower speeds than I would have expected. But I tend to agree that this may be one area in which forum participants may skew toward slower speeds than your typical gameplayer. For me, one of the best things about Civ IV was it was possible to finish a (standard speed) game without investing a couple weeks. And I find standard speed, monarch difficulty offers a reasonable challenge without giving the AI too much crazy stuff. I suspect I'd have to give them more if I slowed down the game.
