You have to make sure that the number of happy faces is larger than the number of unhappy faces. You can check the reason for the particular numbers by reading the tooltip.

To decrease the number of unhappy faces, the reasons given in the tooltip lead to pretty clear advices (have some military unit in the city for protection, for example). The crowdedness problem can be alleviated by whipping (killing people for production bonus under Slavery) (This leads to 1 unhappiness on its own.).

To increase the number of happy faces, build certain buildings (early on temples), have more troups in the city with Hereditary Rule, or connect happiness ressources (early on gold/silver/gems, fur/ivory), or trade for happiness ressources (The F4 screen tells you which civs are connected to your trade network and what they want to trade to you.).

In general, have a quick browse through the Civilopedia to check the effects of the various buildings (including Wonders) on happiness and unhappiness levels.

If you can't do anything to prevent unhappiness from becoming larger than happiness click on prevent growth in the cornor of the city screen.

Try increasing the culture percentage (underneath the science percentage) and build Great Artists.

Once you have Slavery you can pop rush the ungrateful swines.

Remember, the trick is to pop rush at least two at a time, and make sure you don't grow one back in less than 15 turns.

Are you talking about red or green faces? Green faces are unhealthy ones. They require a slightly different set of actions (e.g health specials instead of happy specials), but the general principles are the same.

You can pop rush them too.

Yeah Im a pretty big n00b at this game haha. The green faces are also high because of the population, but I was initially talking about the red faces.

one more question, how do you use the slavery option to kill the overflow of citizens?

You select a building or unit you want to build, once thats done in the bottom middle/right of the city screen theres the city governor box. At the top of it are some greyed out buttons (they're enabled when you have the proper civics) the top one is draft, the one just under that on the left is pop rush, and the one under the draft button on the right is cash rush. When you're running the slavery civic you press the poprush button to create the building/unit immeaditly at the cost of some of your citizens. When you poprush (or cash rush for that matter) it's best to let it be built for 1 turn first since that will greatly decrease the cost of rushing it. Every time you poprush something your city gains 1 unhappy face for a few turns (10 on normal speed, 30 on marathon). Regardless of how many people you kill for it, you get that 1 unhappy face, for that reason it works best to reduce unhappy faces by building something that takes 2 or more people to create. That way you lose 2, 3, 5, etc unhappy and only gain 1 of that back (which then fades away after a few turns).

If you are the aztecs in warlords, you get the Sacrificial Altar UB which takes away the unhappy face quicker.

Gah this is messed up. my technologies already passed bronze casting and all that meaning I should have slavery, but it's greyed out as if I can't use the technology.

Getting Bronze Working makes Slavery available as a Labour Civic, but you need to switch to it in the Civics screen before you are able to pop-rush.

As the person above explained, you need to be running the slavery civic in order to poprush. The same is true with Universal Sufferage to rush buy and Nationhood to Draft.

How do you have slavery civic running? Christ this game is alot more complex than I imagined.
