I'm tempted to do that as well

I have to say Cossacks are/were the most useful unit due to their power advantage and shelf life.

Second has to be Praetorians... you can get on a roll with them, and even when they start getting outdated, they are still useful.

But my truly favorite unit has to be the Gunship. I still love watching them blow away units... especially tanks!

And as long as you nick the sams first, gunships will take care of them also.

I always make sure I have a cavalry unit with Medic II and then promote it to Gunship. Makes a great MASH unit.

Excuse the stoopid, but what did they do to Cossacks in Warlords? AND WHY!?

Samurai though I wish they could be built with copper since macemen can use either. Samurai can basically annhiliate anything of that era, the 2 first strikes end up helping out alot (though I do seem to lose alot to War Elephants, but thats just because I rarely take Formation), and then when it comes time to upgrading you have alot of city raider promoted units to turn into Riflemen. They aren't my gavorite graphically though, I much prefer Civ 3's Samurai graphic.

For looks I would say my favorite are Navy SEALs though they're fairly useless in practice (while semi on the subject, I think I would have preferred some other UU for Americans like a minuteman which could repace a musketman). Unfortunatley the time to build Musketmen is pretty short before you get Riflemen so it probally wouldn't have worked out that well in practice.

Historically speaking, wouldnt the minuteman be a rifleman? Or at least something like a Revolutionary unit? The Redcoat is, so why not the minuteman?

I suppose, when I think Musketmen I think of revolutionary war era technology and riflemen being civil war era, both from the unit design and the technologies being used to make the units. I can see your point however.

Well my FAVORITE unit is the Samurai. With a succesful civil service slingshot and beeline to machinery the devastation you can cause is just mindblowing. First strikes are worth more against weaker apponents, wich is all you will face, even against rome! And super high level samurai with city attack etc can kill defending grenadiers. Not to mention, the "death look".

For flavor, well the samurai is still very high on my list, they look and sound great. But its also much fun watching a bomber or nuke do their buisness.

I'd never really played Rome before, and then suddenly my eyes were opened to the sheer pwnage that is a stack of Praetorians.

Rome is always the Civ I use when moving up a difficulty level. The Praets help break me in.

Rome for me was boring. Too easy to smash everything with Praets. At that point you know the game is won, why continue playing?
