    No, and No.

All I did was I made a file in Civ4/Warlords/Mods/ and called it Test, then made in it a file called Assets, then made in that a file called XML, then put in that the altered UnitInfo.XML

That is all I did, I just changed the numbers in X.

If there is something more I should do, please tell me exactly step by step how to do it.

Sorry Prussia. I haven't delved into mod construction at all, yet. I wouldn't know if that's all you have to do or if there is more to it.

You also forget that amphib promo negates the minus for attacking across a river. Saving a turn or two as you don't have to manuever to avoid attacking across a river.

Doesn't the promotion carry over to upgraded units? That would be a nice extra.

If it's an automatic 'promotion' (as with Marines), yes. If it's a native ability, then no.

Given the overwhelming support for the beserker, I might have been over zealous. I was just going by the manual. I'll have to give it a try. It was going to be my first game, despite the fact I always play random.

I'm currently playing my first game as the Vikings - it's been fun so far.

Though thinking about it, the "Amphibious" on the berserker is all but useless - the only way to really gain from it would be to launch a surprice attack at a coastal city without setting foot on the ground... but that would mean attackin the city without bombarding it's defences first, and without softening the troops with catapults or trebuchets.

After all, if you are going to land your siege units and their protectors on land before attacking, then it makes little sense not to disembark your berserkers as well.

The benefit in attacking across a river is likewise rarely beneficial - if you are attacking a city in a stack, and only the berserkers get to ignore the minus from attacking across a river, then you are STILL going to manouver the stack to a position where they don't have to attack across a river... and the berserkers move along with the rest.

So amphibious on a berserker seems just a great waste, with exceedingly little benefit.

So the Viking UU is really just a maceman with +10% city attack - which is nice of course, but not as powerful as the UUs of many other civs.

Attacking across a river isn't as stupid as you might think, since it gives you the luxury of bombarding from the far side which can often provide significant extra cover against counter-attack (sometimes the only hills are on hte far side of hte river, or it forces the enemy to be left vulnerable to counter-attack by crossing the river first).

Siege units collateral damage is not reduced by attacking across a river - the odds vs the primary target are reduced, but the full collateral is still dealt to other units in a stack. So if you're using suicide siege to soften up a city it doesn't really matter if they attack across a river.

Another rather huge benefit of Berserkers is that the amphib promotion remains after upgrading - so you can have City Raider grenadiers attacking from the sea with frigates bombarding down the defenses - and all ships with high movement from the trading post.

                    Vikings are anything but weak.

                      Good points Blake.

The preservation of the amphibious trait through upgrading Berserkers does improve the value of the trait.

But I never said or thought that the Vikings were weak - my critisism was directed only at their UU. I'm having great fun with the Vikings, and doing very well with them.

Speaking of upgrades, if you upgrade Axemen or Swordsmen into Berserkers, do they also gain the Amphibious promotion or is it only reserved for newly-made Berserkers?

All you really needed to do was copy the unit file over to the corresponding folder in your Custom Assets. The folders are already in place there, and the game will use any files there before it reads the default ones.

Bezerkers themselves aren't a whole lot more useful than Macemen. The +10% city attack is nice. The amphib promo might allow your attack stack to forego anti-melee support if you know you have city approaches across rivers.

As Blake noted though, it's the later unit abilities (i.e. being able to attack from ship after other ships/aircraft have bombarded) that starts making a big difference.

Vikings are about the only civ (well, except India's Fast Worker) whose UU has good value for a large part of the game.

I really enjoyed my game as Vikings. I got a nice random map draw that actually set me up for Berzerker attack from Galleons against some newly built Japanese cities (they were in a chain of islands). And the +1 ship movement was perfect for ferrying troops from my large mainland empire to the war front on the islands.

                              Go to "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Assets\XML\Units" and copy the file "CIV4UnitInfos.xml".

In your "C:\Documents and Settings\Henry\My Documents\My Games\Warlords\CustomAssets\xml\units" paste the copy.

Then edit the copy and run warlords and you'll see a difference.

If you need more detailed step-by-step directions send me a PM.
