  • Viking UU - what does it replace???

Ok, this looks like another confusion.

The manual states (when giving a general overview of new units) that Berserker replaces an Axeman. In a detailed description of Vikings, it says that it replaces Maceman, however as prerequisites it only lists Bronze Working and either copper or iron (which are Axeman prerequisites). Could some, who has an access to the game at the moment (I'm at work right now) confirm which it is?

It replaces macemen. I have been told, they originally tested it as an axemen replacement but found it over powered for that early in the game(axemen w/amphib promo).

But still, it really is the ultimate island-hopper unit for a while.

They took my favorite UU from III and made it a weinie. As far as I can tell the only plus it gets is free attacks from water. Big deal. How often do you attack from water. It is supposed to be a beserker - maybe better strength, harder to kill or faster. Sure, the Vikings attacked from ship when it was approbriate but the beserker aspect has been totally lost.

Don't forget that it gains a +10% bonus for attacking cities. The beserker is a very decent UU, IMO.

I do admit, it would be nice if once in a while they would make the UUS have better attack.

My impression is that Firaxis is moving away from strong UUs and moving toward UUs that are more for flavor and have only a small boost over the unit they replace. This should reduce the advantage that civs with early or otherwise powerful UUs have.

You are probably right. It's one of those cases where we complain "the UUs aren't strong enough!"

And they reply, "they are plenty strong enough. Try playing the game and you'll see how balanced they really are."

It's called a cossack, but they nerfed it in warloads.

I'll attest to the Berserker's formidible nature in attacking cities -- Just this morning a wave of 6 or 8 of them with Combat II managed to kill 4 of my Musketmen with City II, Drill I, who were *in* a city, over a river, behind a wall.

If nothing else, the Beserker seems well positioned to mitigate the various bonuses often associated with cities which, when combined with their individual promotions, seem to make them very well balanced...

Since we are on topic of badly drafted manuals, here's another question - what's a Numidian Mercenary power - 4 or 5?

Don't know, but I tried to change the Berserkers attack by making a new mod and changing the 8 to 9 in UnitInfo.xml, but it didn't work.

Does someone know what I did wrong?

Did you put your UnitInfo.xml into the proper CustomAssets folder (in Warlords, not in Civ4), but then have "no cheating" turned on?

From what I understand, "no cheating" means none of your CustomAssets will be read.
