  • getting bored: ideas welcome

Anything to spice up the game. I know, I should get warlords. But I'll get it eventually.

I was looking at some of the world types. It seems they expanded some of them in one of the patches. fantasy with crazy resources . That seemed a little too far out for my tastes. Jungle in the desert. hmm.

There probably isn't much to spice up the game. My main problem is I can't get the difficulty right. It's either too easy or too hard. I'm looking for challenge, but not too much challenge. The harder levels I'm always forced to resort to warfare to win the game. Once I get the lead, I lose interest. On lower levels I can get the lead peacefully, but I still get bored and don't finish.

Try an easy level with self-imposed challenges. No cottages, for a start. Or no roads. Not researching Alphabet, keeping at the first non-primitive civic in each group, not using certain kinds of units, determining peace or war to other civs solely on their civic choices, etc. In general, try role-playing. Look on Realms Beyond for further inspiration.

Have you tried 18 civs on one of the smallest map types?
This space is empty... or is it?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'higher levels'. Builder wins are attainable at least up to and including emperor, though emperor requires quite precise play on many starts.

I think you should focus on improving your builder play. That should keep you interested.

Try some of the mods made by players Maybe some of those are different enough to make it fun again. I know Civ3 had some awesome fantasy-mod, but am not sure if it exists for Civ4 as well.

Or you can also try to start a game with playing islands, only conquer as victory option. Given you have enough resources to make it (or maybe on islands close to you), don't go exploring untill you have a large army with bombers and marines. Then go out and be the evil, unknown force coming to attack everything

If you enjoy fighting, try an always-war game like RealmsBeyond Epic 6. The AIs do a pretty good job of fighting together, and can present a real challenge. For me, comparison games like this help keep me interested in the game, instead of quitting halfway through to start a new game.

yeah I know. I can't win a builder game above noble. . I could improve my builder play. But I'm not into that much micromanagement.

Go to CFC, download EE3, or Total Realism mods.

Nothing wrong with that. The idea is to have fun, not to finish games.

It's been mentioned before, but gotta emphasize it:

                        Realms Beyond Civilization

I think that must pretty much be the best cure for civ boredom!
At the moment there are 4 games open (you can still play older ones, but the comparison game aspect isn't there so much)
Epic Six is somewhat easy - It's Always War but the AI's are noble and no tech trading.
Epic Seven is designed to be somewhat challenging, being a duel vs an Immortal AI.
Adventure 11 is a bit of a wildcard difficulty-wise, the settings are somewhat unusual. The AI's are monarch but some are teamed together.
Adventure 12 is a gentle adventure, meaning it's designed to be winnable for most players.

Despite the fact I have not yet played an RBC game (though I have all the start saves from the last couple of months ) I would echo that. They look to be well run comparison games.
