Make it four. My girlfriend wasn't too happy, when she was sleeping and I was playing CIV4:W. Altough my volume was very low, suddenly my speakers go KRRRZZZZTTTTT!!!!!!! and I was like "HOLY CRAP!" and my girlfriend was "WTF!?".

Firaxis, cure it. Didn't happen with vanilla Civ IV.

My friend suspects it may be related to spy's as the original reporter of the problem suggested. When it started happenning in his game, it was at about the time he started using spys.

I never built any spys in my game in which the problem occurred, but the AI was using them heavily against me (in a useless effort to deny me access to oil...).

Original reporter of the problem here ;-)

It did seem to only occur when I was clicking on my spies. However, since others have reported the problem at different times, I wonder if this wasn't simply because spies are in the later stage of the game?

I posted a save file early on.

          Whooaah!

Got the sound problem on saturday. It was night, I was peacefully wiping out hostile civilisations, listening to Civ4 on low volume, when I got this loud white noise. I nearly fell off my chair, and was too surprised to remember exactly what I did before. The second time was in normal unit cycling, but it was an infantry unit, not a spy. Then I turned off the sound.

I have an integrated sound chip on the motherboard, newest drivers and all that.

And another thing: I have a saved game which reproducible crashes to the desktop when I turn on the grid immediately after loading, or in the same turn. If I wait a few turns, I can safely turn it on.

As this is easily reproducible (load, ctrl-x), I can post a saved game tomorrow, if someone wants to try it out. But has anyone else experienced likewise behaviour?

I experienced the LWN (Loud White Noise) error. I was getting it pretty consistently when I discovered a new tech. I saved the game, reloaded one of the autosaves and tried to repeat the problem -- with no luck.

This is an annoying bug as other's have pointed out.
              Haven't been here for ages....

I have experienced the LWN error also. It seemed to mostly happen when I was selecting units.

Just got it again. A different game from before and this is the first time the error has occurred: 1960 AD. It happened this time as I had a unit selected and was upgrading it. Now I have turned the volume waaaaayyyy down because I know it will happen again shortly.

I got the noise too in my last game. It did not start happening until fairly late in the game. But I got blasted by it (it is VERY loud) three or four times before I finally won the space race.

I have an audigy 1 card.

Since so many of us are reporting this "LWN" problem, I have created a new thread to gather as much information and user experience as possible. Hopefully this will help Firaxis as they track down the apparent error. I have also included a poll.

Please post additional LWN thoughts and experiences here:

You should post your system details and sound card details on the Loud Distortion/White Noise Bug thread.
