To each their own. I've come to really enjoy raging barbs.
I liked raging barbs before Warlords came out, so there was no Great Wall. I found that once I adjusted to it, it really wasn't so bad and it trained up my troops nicely, whilst also causing the AI some problems. It forced me to go from a 100% builder mindset in the early game to more like a 75% builder mindset... I had to build some early barracks and troops to survive.
I've just tried a few raging barbs starts. Unfortunately I tend to play fractal maps which means a proportion of isolated starts. The barbs just keep coming and coming if you're the only target. Plenty of promotions (Drill III skirmishers rock!) but it gets tiresome fairly quickly. Better to play continents or pangaea maps where the AI takes some of the heat.
Chariots. The best defense is to secure horses asap and pump out some chariots. They have 2 moves and reliably defeat warriors, archers and axemen, which are the primary barbarian units. By the time barb swords show up, you should be able to counter with axes.
Obviously if you don't have horses, you must make do with footsloggers. Get units up on high ground, clearing as much FoW as possible. A good road net is important, as is having a couple more units than you think you actually need.
