  • POWER - What does it do exactly?

This is a noob question but I'll ask it anyway: I've noticed that coal and hydro plants provide power. What does power do exactly?

Well, coal plants add 2 pollution. Otherwise, all they do is add 50% production (25% forge, 25% factory, 50% power plant). Pretty hefty bonus in my opinion.

          Yeah, that's 'all' it does.

You can have hospitals, airports, groceries, supermarkets, bunkers, bomb shelters, the Apollo program, ICBM siloes, and all the other trappings of an advanced modern economy in your city without having to built a power plant first to provide them electricity.

True, but they need the mouse running in the wheel to power those buildings. Luckly that's not a seperate building, it comes as soon as the city is built.

Yes I know it was a really stupid joke. Don't bother telling me.

If you read a factories bones it says plus +25% production, and +50% production with power. When you add in a forge's bonus that's a +100% bonus. That means you can make those buildings twice as fast. Which means that you can have more cities working on armies that can be built twice as fast. I will almost always build a production enacing building at my first chance.

Go for Three Gorges or hydroplant if poss unless you are an expansionist civ or are getting Enviromentalism Tech really quickly. The coal plant really kills health and you can never "unbuild" it.

This is contrary to my experience. If you build a 'clean' plant afterwards, you don't suffer from the 'coal' pollution anymore. Check it out in the unhealth listing.

Playing as Rome, I have never been concerned with 'dirty' power plants other than in my Globe Theater city.

Once Warlords comes out you will have to worry since Ceaser will have Imp instead of Exp.

I have no problem with that at all. I would like for that to be a consideration I have to make (unless I choose the Caesar that retains the old traits ).
