  • Civ 4 As Educator

Well, I had occasion to use two Civ quotes over the American (4th of July) holiday.

1] In one conversation with a guy who just finished an advanced degree from a divinity school, I paraphrased (giving credit to "somebody") that "I have difficulty believing that a God who endowed us with logic and reason would have us forego their use." We were talking about Intelligent Design and Evolution.

2] The other one was just a sign I saw a protester holding. It said (again, paraphrasing) that "He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither..." but the sign ended. I quickly added in my mind: "...and will lose both." I don't know if these are a mixture of two quotes, but Civ has it that way, so that's how I remembered it.

I was also thinking about North Korea's launching its missiles and how the diplomacy text should read "Your recent activity suggests you are preparing for war! -4"

So, there you have it. Civ has made me smarter (or just more like a parrot, but I prefer 'smarter'). When the wife complains that I'm "playing" Civ 4 too much, I'm confident now in saying "I'm studying Civ 4, sweetheart, studying."

Do you guys have moments like this?

I'm taking a computational physics course. I was talking to a lad who had completed a program which was part of an assignment but was working on reducing the run time.

"A designer knows that he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add but when there is nothing left to take away".

I followed this up by saying to myself,

"Wise people speak their minds, fools quote them".

No. It is fools who speak their minds. The wise consider.

              My absolute favorite quote.

I program computers, which usually means I clean up after people that don't program computers well.

On a related note, while watching Superman Returns, the first thing that popped into my head was Civ IV when Lex Luthor quoted Arthur C. Clarke.

Be careful not to overrely on Civ as a learning tool as, for example, the tech traces leave out way more than they include. Still the quotes are fun. I like the Jeffersonian quote on banks being more dangerous than standing armies.

In today's age of corporate scandals, I chuckle at the corporation quote every time it comes up
