That's why I don't usually go to the random lobby
Besides they're pretty rude there, so I prefer to play with people I know. And it's more fun to send that SOD at someone you know and can abuse.
    Our games move pretty quick.

And that's why you're not representative of the average MP player . Armchairknight's point was that you can't really stand up and take a break during MP games, which is very much true for most lobby games.

Unfortunately, too, getting to play with folks you know isn't so easy. First of all, you need to have such a bunch of friends willing to play with you . And then there's the question of setting the games up.

I play games in the random lobby. Largely because I never know in advance when I am going to have the time to play MP, so I just show up looking for a game.

There is a lot of juvenile in game attack minded behavior. I had someone recently throw waves of units at me during a point which didn’t really make sense for them to do so. I was crippled by the war, he (I assume a “he”) was crippled by the war, and we were both out of reach of winning. His next move after failing to take territory was to abandon the game.

Aggravating, but not atypical in my limited experience.

Yes experienced the same. They try a dumb gambit and if doesn't work, they're out of there and your game has had most of any future fun removed. But we're the type to continue anyway.
I must admit though that one night I went out there and met someone looking for the same type of experience that I was, and has now joined us in other games. (It was his first time out there so he hadn't been corrupted by it yet )

Now that's a problem with too many online games. Sadly. Online FPS games are often destroyed by the people that play them, too. Moreso than Civ. In RTS at least, I've usually experienced decent behaviour, thanks to the 1-v-1 culture, though certainly with notable exceptions.

SP only. I can, and do, spend ages blithering about whether to build a mine or a windmill, and whether it's worth building a rail link between A and B - or should it be A to C, ar maybe D . . . And as for making the momentous decisions about what to build - well !

You sure that wasn't a SP game and you got stuck next to Montezuma?

I play both single and PBEM. As mentioned before, PBEM takes a looong... time so it's not for the impatient.

I just got into online MP, I've been a big fan of hotseat since Civ2 MGE, although it wasn't very good IMO in CivIII, in CIV the series has totally redeemed itself, and this past semester two buddies and I dropped our cumulative GPAs about .3 points because of Friday night gaming sessions that went to monday morning.

Online so far I've been called the typical s700p1d n00bz0r, slow, and I've been told that the experienced players won't "reveal their secrets" essentially putting a bad taste in my mouth for online BLAZIN' games. I'd prefer a longer pace, normal maybe? and a decent turn time.

Perhaps rah, if you could hook me up with the link I might join you in your saturday night games?

Marathon, the reason my friends and I have been playing the same hotseat game since 2006...

Metaliturtle, we usually play direct IP connect games and contact each other using ICQ. I guess I could check to see if I can remember any of my other IM ids and passwords.

About lengths of turns. Ask Master Dave. He joined us this weekend for a few games. He was originally worried that we didn't use a timer. He mentioned that he was surprised how fast the turns went. (with the exception of a couple of longer turns that I needed defending his dueling SOD attacks) They were all spirited games, (aka, I've never killed or lost so many units before games) Fun was had by all. We play on slightly larger maps then the blazing kids, but it makes the games last a little longer than there archer rushes.

Whoops. My mistake. You’re right it was an SP Custom Game and I had checked both “AI Uses Units More Skillfully” and “AI Will Try Suicide Gambit And Leave Its Nation Crippled Beyond Repair”.

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
