  • resource question

This question is prompted by a comment in the "raging barbs" thread. In Civ3 all you needed to get a resource was a route to it, so you could get a resource by building a city in the resource tile. CIV doesn't give you the resource until you have a route and the appropriate improvement (mine, farm, plantation), which I think is more realistic, even if more time consuming. My question is this, "If I build a city in an iron tile, do I get access to the iron even though I can't build a mine there?" I know I could answer this question myself by manipulating a game, but I just read the thread and can't take the time right now to check it out, so I thought I'd call on the vast expertise of this forum. I'll try it myself after work today, if there is no response by then.

You get the resource when you learn Iron Working.

    Best regards,

He must already have iron working or he wouldn't see the iron to build a city there.

A city built on Iron will work for you, yeah. In fact, any city built on a resource gives you the resource.

                No...

(After import duties, customs, etc., there won't be anything left for the other civ.)

Using a different example, you can build a city on dyes but you won't get access to the dyes until you research calender.

So does that mean if I trade for iron I don't need to connect my cities up? Meaning, does just the capitol get the traded resource (and any cities connected to the capitol), or do ALL you cities get the resource, or do any cities that can trade with the selected empire get the resource?

In short, how does trading for resources work?

It should be that the capital gets the resource traded for. And hence, all cities connected to the capital get it, too.
