This question is prompted by a comment in the "raging barbs" thread. In Civ3 all you needed to get a resource was a route to it, so you could get a resource by building a city in the resource tile. CIV doesn't give you the resource until you have a route and the appropriate improvement (mine, farm, plantation), which I think is more realistic, even if more time consuming. My question is this, "If I build a city in an iron tile, do I get access to the iron even though I can't build a mine there?" I know I could answer this question myself by manipulating a game, but I just read the thread and can't take the time right now to check it out, so I thought I'd call on the vast expertise of this forum. I'll try it myself after work today, if there is no response by then.

He must already have iron working or he wouldn't see the iron to build a city there.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Using a different example, you can build a city on dyes but you won't get access to the dyes until you research calender.LandMasses Version 3 Now Available since 18/05/2008.

(Hey, while we're at it...)
