    It does matter.

Try the lowest settings. If you are using anti-aliasing inside the game turn that off. Use "low resolution tiles." Use 16-bit color depth. Use 1024x768 resolution.

If you can run the game in that without any errors you can start increasing the settings.

Since you are overclocking it may be a problem with overheating. Check the CPU temperature if the game crashes again.

yeah i was thinking the same thing with the overclocking issue.. so i turned down the FSB about 5 mhz just to give it alittle room instead for changes in heat ect. i'll start turning down the graphics next time i get around to playing (this weekend). i don't think i'll try em that low though.. but i'll definately lower them a significant amount. The X800 should be able to handel 1280x1080 and 32 bit without a problem and the video card isn't overclocked either.

funny thing is... i've played plenty of games for almost if not longer than civ4 and never had this problem before - even with it overclocked. the 3d engine plus all the units in the latter part of the game.. esp if its a huge map... must really bog down the computer. kinda surprising to find out that one of the more advanced games out there isn't a FPS but a turned based game.

I read somewhere that the Civ graphics is a bit of an overkill, using too many polygons and such.

Also, some people found that using 16-bit colors makes all the difference between the game working and crashing all the time.
