  • CIV4 Still crashes, "Critical error", with v1.62 when playing for semi-long periods

Last night, and the night before, i ran into a few problems with CIV4 playing various games. While i use to get "Civ4 has run out of video memory" (exact error i don't recall) this time i get in the middle of a game with little warning (via a slight slowdown like i got before). "CIV4 has created a critical error and must be closed" error. Last night it happened while playing for what i think was about 4-5 hours long before the error occured on a Huge sized map.

It creates a log file, which it claimed was in my local settings/temp folder under my documents and settings for the current user. Nothing was there when i looked this morning. Hopefully i'll be able to post more about this incident.. my guess is i'm not the only one so feel free to post below me and help the developers get rid of these bugs.... which you think should be gone by now. lets just hope those people who couldn't play at all before 1.52 can at least play now.

    Specs:
    1.8 (3000+) Althlon64 939 socket, OCED to 2.85 (water cooled)
    DFI Lanparty SLI mobo
    MSI x800 256mb
Catalyst 5.11 (will try again after an upgrade to the latest)

    Don't forget to post specs....

(edit.. i typed 1.62 isntead of 1.61 in thread title....)

Catalyst 5.11 is a really old driver. I now have 6.13 and I understand ATI has since released 6.14.

I haven't had any problems and have upgraded two machines thus far including a laptop.

Turn off the warning setting in the Civ ini file. That will at least prevent the video memory "error" from stopping your game (I have experienced the same problem, BTW).
One of these days I'll make 501 posts, and you won't have to look at my silly little diplomat anymore.

              AppName: civilization4.exe AppVer: 1.6.1.1841 ModName: cvgamecoredll.dll
              ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 001045f0

thats the exact error.. theres more info that i can't copy when i click the "click here" for more info button.. and its nice that windows stores it in a temp directory and gives me the path.. but then must delete it after i go try to find the file it told me about.. cause its not there. anyone else getting this?

That's probably because you have system files hidden in your folder preferences. That's a default in Windows and you have to change it to get at folders like the one you're looking for.

nope not hidden its stored in my local users/temp folder and i've got hidden files and folders turned on to "show". the .txt file that is mentioned when it crashes just isn't there.. plain and simple.

A better question might be: "Do you have RAM?"

Sounds like that doens't matter. I have 1GB / 256MB as well, and can play on the highest graphical levels.
