I usaually don't become a religion, so I don't usaually read them. Play all the time but don't read it too much. I could recognize symbols though.

Buddhism is the Gold guy and Judaism is the white circle with the 6 pointed blue star.

                      This thread is great

The problem with not having differences in religions is not just to avoid offending people, but I believe it can be very difficult to get some bonuses to the different religions, that are balanced and a little bit "realistic"

One thing I'd like to see in this game is religious wars:
When starting a war, you have two options, normal war and religious war. You can only start a religious war against a civ with a different state religion than you (and it's not possible under free religion)
The benefits of a religious war are:
                      - Other civs that share your state religion likes you a bit more (if the enemy civ has the holy city for your state religion, the effect will be higher)
                      - All your cities without your state religion has a higher chance than normal to adopt the state religion
                      - For newly conquered cities, the chance of them adopting your state religion is even higher
                      - Under Theocracy, all cities with state religion get's one extra happiness

                      Negative side-effects:
                      - Other civs without your state religion hate you more. Those with the same state religion as the civ you're at war against will hate you even more
                      - Each turn there's a small chance that a random city in your civ will "get rid of" a non-state religion in the city (could be positive, depending on how you see it)
                      - For each non-state religion in your cities, you get one more angry citizen

The civ you're at war against can at all times stop the war, if they decide to adopt your state religion for at least 20 turns

A bit offtopic, but at least this was about religion
I haven't really given this much thought, just got the idea 10 minutes ago

Strangely enough there is a Biblical interpretation of why all religions except Islam are open to ridicule these days.

It's a prophesy in Deuteronomy about strangers becoming higher than their hosts.

                          Why restrict it to that?

Just because X civilization claims to by Y religion, doesn't mean they are.

European "Christians" fought many bloody wars against other European "Christians" whome they accused of heresy.

Sunni and Shia Muslims have been at each others' throats almost since the foundation of Islam, all due to a dispute over whether or not Muhammad's son-in-law should have succeeded him as head of the Calphate.

Heck, people have even killed each other over the significance of a lost shoe, even while their Messiah appealed for calm

                            To keep it simple

I wouldn't want the AI to start a religious war against me, after I accepted their state religion to avoid a war
