Actually I've found that the number of turns for something to complete is actually quite easy to estimate from the two bars showing how much is built and how much extra will be built next turn.
And you normally know which is your top hammer, top science and top money city.
And if you aren't sure you can just hover over those bars to get all the information you need in the little pop-up thing in the bottom left of the screen.

"Detailed city info" shows those numbers under cities, and yes, it's off by default. Although it's beyond me how anyone can play with it off.
In my days, we played Civ2 without either one and did just fine!
(Not that I'd ever play without them turned on in a game where it was possible, but I digress.)

I didn't see anything about how you can't see the immediate unit health after right-clicking your unit onto an enemy anymore. There's a little questionmark, now, and you have to wait through the little fight animation to find out who really won and what the health is.
