The way I see it, additional iron mines already provide several bonuses:
* Each additional iron mine yields an additional +3 hammers
* The resource of each additional iron mine above the first can be traded to other civs (yet still yield +3 hammers to you)
* The more iron mines you have, the more difficult it is for your enemies to cut off iron supply.
While larger civs needing more iron mines sounds good from a realism standpoint, I tend to side with those that think it would add too much in micromanagement.
