I have not been able to, I am "Too Powerful" even when I have a high relationship and everthing else, Has anyone else ever got into one?

I have a couple of times.

Last night I actually entered into one with Saladin (he was #2 in ranking, I was #1 at that point), and prior to entering into the pact I was building the Apollo Project.

Once I entered into the pact, I was told I could no longer build the AP. I thought this was because Saladin had already built it (he had the tech before I did).

But.. Uhh... No. I guess because it triggers 'team projects' you have to build it AFTER you become a team... Or maybe have it completed PRIOR to becoming a team.

All I know is I wasted a good ten turns before I figured out that I still needed to build the AP and there was some sort of timing issue that had stopped me from building it.

Great to have to build the AP 1.5 times (not to mention the lost turns of confusion as to why it stopped me from building the AP but wouldn't allow me to build Casings.)

Its also damn annoying that it sets your tech path for you. As if what the AI wants to research is more important and takes precendent. Screw that. Why can't we tell the AI what THEY should be researching?

      NOOB!

You can. Infact, you both can be researching 2 seperate things. In case you want the AI to focus on the same tech you are researching, simply open the diplo screen, click on "lets discuss something else" and then there is a option for asking him to research something.

As for perm alliances - i almost always get one in my games. I play on prince so i'm not always the most powerful civ. Weaker civs love to join me to become a more 'powerful civ'.

If i am the most powerful civ, i find it very hard to do perm alliances - perhaps the programers put in check and balances to not make it to easy for the player. Why would you want a perm alliance if you are the most powerful civ?

Furthermore, the civ you are trying to enter into a perm alliance must like you - doesn't have to be friendly, but definitely pleased.

Furthermore, you need to have a defensive pact with them for some time before they agree. Some civs agreed after as little as 3 turns after a defensive pact, and others take up to XX turns - according to some on this board.

        That's unfortunate about the AP...

As far as techs go, you can choose whatever you want to research. The AI may or may not work with you, but it has no control over what you do

Fortunately, it's not true about the AP...

Really? It's not? So I just imagined the fact that I was already halfway through building it and upon entering a PA it told me I could no longer build it, and then had to go back and start it over again?

That's an interesting theory. I didn't know my imagination was so active.

And you're also off on 'you can research whatever you want'.

Yes, you CAN. But the AI DOES set your research path for you when you enter into a PA. If you want to do something else, you have to go change it.

If you're trying to be helpful, then tell the complete story about how the game interacts. If you're not trying to be helpful, then simply bugger off.

i see.. by AP you ment apollo project. I thought it was a typo and was supposed to be PA = permanent alliance - since that is the primary subject being discussed here. I don't know nothing about the Apollo project because i turn that victory condition off. If the apollo program was indeed what was ment, then i obviously made a mistake.

As for the research path..... apperently we are playing different games. 'Cause in my games I ALWAYS set the research path and the AI then either decides to do the same (rarely) or goes off on a tangent. Perhaps there is an internal mechanism that chooses which civ gets to choose the reasearch path, but your story is definitely NOT the "complete story" - so why don't you try being more helpful, or 'bugger off'.

              Good day mate

Try reading the entire message and comprehending what is written. How could AP mean PA when I'm referring to something that I'm BUILDING that it prevented me from BUILDING?

Because I'm not the one who was being an ass, calling other people names, and acting as if they had all the answers.

Rather, I'm the one who was simply discussing MY EXPERIENCES with PA with smellysquid who has never been able to even enter into a PA.

And once again, YOU are the one who is claiming that MY experiences are INCORRECT.

They quite frankly, are not. If you have always gotten to choose the tech path in your games, while I have always been forced into different tech paths then yes.. clearly there is some mechanism that determines which CIV starts by dictating the other's tech path.

It would be far more enlightening to discuss that MECHANISM to find out how it actually works than to come on here, call names, and declare the experience's of others as incorrect.

whoa I sense tension on here. Well anywho I personally have never had a problem, I personally be able to set the agenda as far as tech completion. I suppose its possible though that they AI might take over if they can get the tech more quickly? Not too sure on that one. Also with the Permanent Alliances I have never had a problem with the fellow nation giving me whatever I ask for (which is why I love the PA's $$$) including arranging the order in which we get techs.

P.S. Just thought of this, maybe on the initial tech after PA is formed the computer automatically switches to the tech that will be completed first? And then allows you to choose the next tech? Just one idea anyhow.

                        Woo! Spring Break!

As for permanent alliances, I think earlier posters suggesting that it is more difficult to attain if you are ranked #1 as a check designed by programmers to keep the player from winning 'cheaply'.

I suspect that the AI does two checks when deciding whether to enter into a PA. One, are they friendly enough with your empire, and two, would it 'benefit' them? I don't know what would really go into the 'benefits' equation, and it might not exist. Intuitively, though, I suspect that it does.
