  • Mid game strategy

It's probably not very helpful without a saved game to post but here's my situation

    Emp/Cont/Stand/Ceasar

I'm doing well but Ghandi across the ocean has the Tech/Econ lead and while I'm not sure how best to defeat him, at 1550 AD I should be planning it.

My continent is the larger and I have the most land.
Fred, Toku, and Khan share it with me while Sal and Pete are with Ghandi. I'm digesting the nice bite I took out of Fred and watching as Toku starts to do the same. Kahn is at the far end.

Long term Ghandi is the greatest threat in terms of victory. On my continent Toku is fairly powerful but not a real threat because of my Tech lead and greater size.

I'm thinking that my best plan would be to pile on Fred, take his core cites before Toku does and then turn on the Japanese after I get Cannons and Grenadiers.

I think I can do this and not stunt my eco growth. After the dust settles I'll have to decide whether to go for a Dom win or a late game push for the space ship.

As for Ghandi, I'll keep trading with him but buttering up Peter so that when he gets Cossacks I might get him to go to war on Ghandi.

    Check diplomacy

It would be worth figuring out how well Gandhi and his neighbours are getting along first to see if they are likely to fight. With an ocean separating you it will be hard for you to mount a serious campaign yourself and his tech lead will make this harder.

You will also want other leaders to stop trading with Gandhi. Strike at his friends to cut any support they might be providing.

...and if you seek Domination it's very likely you'll have to invade as it's rare for a single continent to have 65% of the land area (especially when the other continent is big enough for three AIs).

If you are not going for Domination victory, it's a bit late to take more cities and actually benefit from them. Better concentrate on damaging Ghandi.

Unfortunately, I don't know what technologies you have but anyway...
If you have Galleons and Cavalry land your units on Peter's territory, then look for an Indian city lightly defended. Give military tradition to Peter and make him go to war against Ghandi. If you manage to do that Ghandi will suffer a lot of damage.

If you take an Indian city just raze it.

Too late will be carved on Ceasar's headstone.

The German cities were too far within Japanese territory to be of much use and when I turned on Toku his military tech had caught up with mine. All the while Ghandi continued to race ahead undisturbed.

I will restart from the save before I attacked and see what is possible. I think though I was too complacent in my early game. A good start position and a natural border of jungles and peaks allowed me to build undisturbed. I pulled off a CS slingshot and built the Great Library but failed to expand early enough. What a waste.

At emperor level you need to pay a lot more attention to the tech differences and diplomatic relations.

If you've completed the slingshot, I'd recommend researching to Literature for GL then bee-line Optics to discover and circumnavigate the world.

All this time you will want to avoid researching the techs that the AI holds since you can pick these up through a trade. If you are trading but the AI civs are not then you’ll maintain a local tech lead which is what you want for continental domination.

Your bee-line to Optics and probably Astronomy will then open up the next stage which is to bee-line to Liberalism (after Gunpowder) and to take Chemistry as the free tech. At this stage you will rule the waves with vastly superior units and a +1 movement bonus.

One other tech I would try for first after GL is Philosophy. Taoism would be a nice bonus but the real reason you would want this is to run Pacifism. The Great Library alone will generate 16 GPP/turn.

That's very true, I don't actively work the diplomatic side of the game. I guess every weapon is needed on Emp and above.
