Well since we're talking about civ here, I think Paganism is pretty well defined.

        Actually, there is one:

With no state religion, each religion presence is +1 culture while with a state religion, only the state religion is +1 culture.

And the religious civics still apply:

Org religion : High upkeep but can build Missonaries without Monstanries. (Maybe in a marathon game very early on it might be better to spread your intended state religion first.)

Theology: Med upkeep and no religion spreads. (All around a bad choice for no state religion)

Pacifism: No civic upkeep but increased unit upkeep. (Usually the increase in unit upkeep is more than the decrease in civic upkeep)

It pays in the long run to "bribe" a Civ to change to your religion. That's if you have founded one in the first place.

I did once, they changed again after a few turns

Another 1000 coins down the drain.

Now I just convert all their cities and wait (sometimes ask) till they convert themselves. And I don't have any hope converting a civ with it's own holy city.

If you spread your religion to enough of their cities computer players convert automatically. Unless they have also founded their own, then all you get is more $$$.

Life is just tough that way.

                I can confirm/deny that.

You get no Civic bonus from Organized Religion, Pacifism, or Theocracy if you have no state religion. You also get no happyness bonus from having the state religion.

You DO get a cultural bonus for EVERY religion you have in your cities, though. That means lots and lots of culture for a city with multiple religions and no state religion (and even more if it has one or more religions founded in it)
