1. because you cannot just change skin and release it as a brand new game. (with some new features like the workshop) that would be a whole new level of ripping your customers off
That hasn't stopped companies before
2. I don't want them to waste valuable civ5 develop time to SMAC 2
Ehhh...? The time 'wasted' will always be the same, as it's exactly the same work done. The only difference is the package
4. The civ4 engine is REALLY GOOD
That has been the point the whole time. Because the engine is good, it'll make much more sense to use that engine to create the SMAC II game, than to build a new engine
Maybe 60% of the civ4 players will buy the SMAC expansion
Maybe... but it'll also p*** off some players. An expansion is supposed to add something to a game, not make a completely new game, as your SMAC Expansion would be. If it was released as an XP I'm 100% sure I wont buy it because of this, while if it was released as a new game I might buy it (if it's any good)
THEY!!111 OMG WTF LOL LET DA NOMADS AND TEH S3D3NTARY PEOPLA BOTH MAEK BITER AXP3REINCES

If it was an x-pack it'd be cheaper than a full game - therefore I'd be more likely to buy it.
Isn't CyberShy suggesting it be an "additional" x-pack anyway?

I think Gamebryo engine is flexible enough to make brand new SMAC game based on it.
The Gambryo engine is just graphics, though.

SMAC is in fact just civ 2.5
No way. Alpha Centauri is greater than Civ 3 in many ways. Even Civ 4 is playing catch up in some of the areas.

what if the unit workshop in SMAC was added as a feature for the Xpack after all you would then get some more interesting options ie swords/axes /maces all being available relatively early just the materials changing the relative strengths. it would also give a better feel for how units changed over time

I don't want a civ3 / smac debate, just in timelines. It's civ1, civ2, SMAC, civ3, civ4. Thus that makes SMAC civ 2,5 since the number 3 has already been given
Of course an additional XP
And they can add more to it then just change the look of the game and the techtree! I hope they'll do that with any XP anyway.

That's one way of making sure that I wont buy the XPack
