Alt-click selections always go to the top of the list, until the city finishes building the unit. Then if there's something after that it will go to the bottom. So you need to build the Barracks first. Or you can Alt-click the Grenadier then place the Barracks over top of that. You would use Ctrl-click to put your selection at the top of the list. To place something at the bottom of the list, just use Shift-click.

Leave the city for 30 turns
The only bother is you'll have to select promotions for your units (actually you can auto this too from the Options menu) and fortify/sentry/sleep them.
Auto end turns and you can have a nap while the game plays itself.

No, seriously. I don't have the game present, but I think you can Alt-Shift-Click.
Alt-Shift-Click Cannons will then put them at the bottom of your list, and Cannons are all you get once the rest of the queue is done.
Alt-Ctrl-Click will put it at the top, making the alternation described in the OP.

Thank you, I didn't know you could do that. Which means I don't even have to wait a turn to get multiple perpetual builds in there, I just use those commands.

PS That's not true about the Cannons. If you have multiple Alt-clicks, the city will alternate them. Once it's finished with one, it will go to the bottom of the list and the next one will be built.

No, I was engaged in a campaign with Napolean at the time, then when Ghenghis entered into things I ended up losing a city I had taken from him earlier. If he hadn't joined the fray I probably could have managed since the rest of them where coming from the other continent and the forces they were landing weren't all that large. But trying to fight a land war on two fronts was too much, I was spread too thin.

It certainly comes in handy in your West Point city. You can just keep building all the units there without having to bother with a queue. Just let the city cycle through them all.
