It depends. Can you roll over one or two of them before the rest arrives?

No, I was engaged in a campaign with Napolean at the time, then when Ghenghis entered into things I ended up losing a city I had taken from him earlier. If he hadn't joined the fray I probably could have managed since the rest of them where coming from the other continent and the forces they were landing weren't all that large. But trying to fight a land war on two fronts was too much, I was spread too thin.

The problem was that Napolean had declared war on me shortly after I had ended a campaign against Ghenghis, and I hadn't had a chance to consolidate my gains. I had to siphon off some troops in the captured Mongol cities in order to deal with the French. In retrospect, I shouldn't have tried to take any French territory, just fought a defensive war while building up my forces in the other cities. Napolean's initial attack fizzled out quite early so I didn't have to worry all that much about him. That's what I get for being greedy I suppose.

It's the AI dogpile effect, once 2 declare on you everyone wants a piece of the action.

Yup, I think you nailed it on the head. Just hold off another evil horde until you have consolidated your gains. You don't have to take his cities, just break his momentum. You can even send pillagers into his territory to destroy resource facilities and, more importantly, roads.

I didn't really have to do anything to him. He sent a stack of units trying to take back a city I had captured from him earlier but I beat him off fairly easily. And judging by what he was guarding the city with I was after, that was pretty much the bulk of his forces. He had a bunch of inferior units stockpiled in Paris, but other than that he was a spent force. I had this gut feeling when I went after him that I was leaving myself vulnerable to Ghenghis, and sure enough.

I think the main problem was that they were all friends with each other. I've never seen such a high negative diplomacy score. Like I said, it was +10 for "You declared war on my friend." I haven't really been paying all that much attention to those ratings, and who's friendly with whom. I guess I should from now on.

This reminds me that, in Master of Orion, you can go against a decision made by the Galatic Council. If you do that, all other empires will start attacking you.

So, sometimes I would just made a vote that was totally opposite to what I wanted, then denied the decision, then proceed to beat up on everybody else with a super force.

                Ah, the haydays of youth.

Master of Orion II, right? I don't remember that being allowed in the original Master Of Orion, but I guess I could go play a game and find out.

Actually, I quite miss Master of Magic, that was an interesting game, and I can't play it on my Windows machines anymore (Not since Windows 3.0 anyway).

BTW: Whatever happened with Candle'bre? I only read about it, and it sounded interesting, but I don't know if it is now a halted project, or still active.

I prefer the original. It has a much better feel of a star spanning galatic empire.

You sure? IIRC MoM came out for Windows 95.

                      Yeah, I remember that.

That was a great game...so many evil things you could do. I remember one game, where at the end of the game it was just me and one other player, and we were allies, so I built a huge fleet of bio-warfare ships, put several dozen around each one of his planets while still allied with him, and then declared war on him and wiped out something like 80% of the population of his entire species in the first turn.

And what did you do to get 6 AI civs that annoyed with you?

I usually have one AI at a time mad at me, while the rest are pleased or friendly, at least until I've had my way with them. Alexander is really a great guy once you get to know him. He just has a few issues, like his aggression, that you have to work around. But once you're on his side, he loves to fight all comers, for a price that is, the ultimate mercenary. Sometimes I'll give him a key military tech to give him an advantage in a war, if it looks like he needs a little help.

BTW, nice tips on the build queue. One question that I should know the answer for by now, but don't, is how to add more things to the build queue without changing the order. Is that an alt-click also? Say I'm building a barracks and I click grenadier, it puts grenadier first. Does alt-grenadier keep the order unchanged?

Well Napolean had tried to take back a city I had captured from him earlier, and three civs wanted to build a city in this corner of my empire I hadn't colonized yet. After I destroyed the last one, 2 more decided that they'd had enough of me beating up on their friends so they jumped into the fray. I did manage to make peace with one of them after a couple of turns, but the rest weren't interested in talking things over. I would have been alright if the other civ on the continent had stayed out of it, but I wasn't able to fight a land war on two fronts, plus keep my coastal cities properly defended.

Alt-click selections always go to the top of the list, until the city finishes building the unit. Then if there's something after that it will go to the bottom. So you need to build the Barracks first. Or you can Alt-click the Grenadier then place the Barracks over top of that. You would use Ctrl-click to put your selection at the top of the list. To place something at the bottom of the list, just use Shift-click.
