It just came to my mind

Did you know that if you build a mine on a hill
and then later a railroad, you get 1 ekstra hammer

As far as i know its not documentet in the manual
and I cant find it in the Civilopia either
But from earlyer versions off civ, i knew it was a possibility, so i'we tryed it out, and it still works

Very helpful late game, where you tend to need
hammers for expencive unit/buildings or spacerace.
    Hmm........Is this a good idear ?

Man, there really has been a lot of great discussion in this thread. I know it has helped me out immensely, so a BIG thank you to everyone.

I have gone from not being able to compete at all on the Noble level to being in a close 2nd to Mansa Musa in around the year 1940 AD. VERY close game. Mansa has the lead on the Space Race but, I am not sure he has the time to complete it. I have sent in spies to attempt to sabotage his efforts but, man is it expensive.

I recently built the UN and the Pentagon in two fo my cities, unfortunately for me the 3rd power, Haspetut, votes for him in any elections.

At this point I think I only have a few options:

      1. Place it safe and try to out point him in 2050
      2. Invade a lesser Civ to boost my UN votes and overall score
      3. Go balls to the wall to try and beat him in the space race using spies to stunt his progress (exspensive).
      4. Make nice with all other civs to try and out vote him in the UN.

I admit it may be too late for me in this game but, I am going to try something. As the saying goes, 2nd place is like kissing your sister.

I could also invade Mansa but, he is in tight with the 3rd ranked Civ, Haspetut, and he has about a 1/2 step leda on me militarily (Bradleys and Fighters vs. WWII era tanks).

Will be sure keep you all up to date on what happens since I kind of started this whole thing.

Another advantage of mining nearby hills and connecting them to the trade network is that I regularly get new resources appearing in places I already have mined and connected. Especially Coal and Aluminium when they come along. It's great finding out you already have them both the same turn you research the tech.
The odds are 1 in 10000 of something popping, so mining just for the sake of hoping isn't really worth.

I agree. But was a nice surprise. Resources that you couldn't see because of the tech level regularly turn up in hills I've mined though.

BTW if you have 50 mines and 200 turns... that's 10,000 goes at 1 in 10000...

I mainly do it for the hammers.

It's 1 in 10000 for each resource type that can appear, but there's 8 different resources that can be found in a Mine. So the odds of a mine popping something are actually much higher, 1 in 1250 if my math is correct.
That's considering it's the end of the game when all reources are exposed.

How do you get the 1-10.000
              Is that official
It feels to me that most games something POP-UP
(I play maraton only, so i get many turns)
              Hmm........Is this a good idear ?

Someone posted the quote from the XML IIRC.

It's rare, but it does happen if you play long enough.
One game I was sending lots of troops to steal a resource only to have it appear on a hill next to my cap.
                  SWEET.

yes, it's the number that appears in the XML line that deals with the random discovery.

                      MrPhil:

Good luck with your game. It sounds like you're figuring out the tile improvement and combat. One think that helped me immensely with combat, and you may already know this, is to use Alt (or is it shift...) right click on the mouse. This will tell you the percentage chance of victory for a specific unit.

                      Good luck.

It's right-clicking on the other unit, without letting go of the mouse button unless you want to engage that unit. Otherwise just drag the cursor back to the starting tile and pick another unit.

You can also really slow your opponent down in the space race by continually sabotaging his aluminum mine. This will make most/all parts take twice as long to build. I destroyed Mansa's aluminum mine about 5 times in one game as he kept trying to rebuild it.

I finally got tired enough of this that I decided to take the time to figure out how to improve it. I changed it so that Civil Service raises the farm bonus to +2f total, and Biology raises the bonus to +3f total, bringing farms up to par with all other tile improvements.

If you'd like to do this to your game as well, you just need to edit the Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\XML\Terrain\CIV4ImprovementInfos.xml file with a text editor. I replaced the brackets with parenthesis so it would show up here. Just press control-f and do a search for TECH_BIOLOGY, then add the section in bold. The order is important... the civil_service section must be before the biology section.

Here's the attached edited file I was talking about in the previous post in the form of a text file. Just change the file extention to xml and replace your current file in D:\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\XML\Terrain. Be sure to make a backup of the original first, so you can revert to the original if you wish
