  • 10 things to make the game better in my eyes.

I had some off time at work, so I wrote these down.

The first seven are simple things that I think could be patched into the game without much fuss. I wasn't thinking Civ V when I thought of these or even an expansion. Just simple additions.

These deal with the diplomacy aspect of the game. Right now, I don't think there is enough of it.

    1. Border Disputes: I brought this up in a separate thread and got a decent response from the fans. In that thread I suggested that borders would become set after awhile, but for simplicity sake, a tile would not be considred fully owned by any particular civ until it has a 75% stake in it. Disputed borders could be show as checkered or striped with the two disputing countries colors. Disputed borders would have a large negative effect on diplomatic relations often leading to war and the war will not end until one country agrees to give up its vested interest in the tiles.

    2. Nuclear Weapons: I have yet to build them, use them or have them used on me in game. Seems like a waste to me. usually, the UN prohibits their use and they never get built. My idea would be simple. Even if the UN prohibits their use, countries should still be allowed to build them, but with drastic negative diplomatic drawbacks. This would be even more drastic if they are ever used. I pulled this idea from the newspaper with Iran and the UN knocking heads.

    3. Espianage: It says that using spies could lead to war, but I haven't seen it. This should be a big diplomatic boo boo id one of your spies gets caught on foreign soil.

    4. Military Power: I think the AI takes your military power into account when it decides to war with you. I'd like to see this in the diplomacy screen.

"We fear your mighty armies" or "Your puny armed forces are no match for us."

    5. Spreading Religion: Sending missionaries to spread religion in foreign cites should be frowned upon by the other civs and it should show on the diplomatic screen.

"You are spreading your pagan beliefs in my land!"

    6. Cultural Difference: When your culture outweighs another culture drasticly, this should lead to jealousy and maybe war?

    7. Lend/Lease: There should be an option with each unit to place it in a "pool". When you click on the option, the unit dissapears off the map and is up for grabs. Other nations could then offer you a trade for the units. Or you could "gift" them to another civ. Selling or gifting arms to one civ would be considered bad by the enemies of that civ. I do this anywa, whenever a small civ gets picked on by another. I send transports of modern tanks over to help the underdog. This idea would just make it easier and add a diplomatic element to it.

The next one I know has been brought up many times. Here's my take.

    8. Rebellion: I have a simple idea for this. It would only be availble when playing games where not all civs are being used. The only time a rebellion is possible, is when a city other than your capital has more culture. At this point, the chance of rebellion increases each turn until either the capital gets more culture or you move the palace to the new city. If a rebellion occurs, the new city becomes the capital of a new AI civ. Other cities in close proximity to the rebelling city will have a chance to flip too, but the farther away from the rebelling city, the less of a chance they will flip.

The last two are strictly "candy" I just think they would be cool. They involve a lot more work, though, so probably for an expansion.

    9. Return of the Palace! I know, most of you hate the palace. It was kind of dumb. Here's how to make it better and useful. Instead of just the Palace, have the screen display the mainstreet in your capital with your palace at the end. Behind the palce, you would see any wonders you have built in that city. On the corner, you would have a man and woman, dressed in clothes of the particular age you are in. If you have flight, a plane could be flying by. If you have combustion, cars would drive by. On another corner, a newsboy holds a paper that has random headlines generated by game events. There's just so much that could be done with this, and there are so many ways, you can make it so that information is garnered from it. It would be fun and informative to view the page.

    10. Leader End Movies. It's kind of dull wiping out a civ. There's nothing but a simple text message that marks the event. I think it would be cool to see a movie of each leader's demise. Washington surrenders his sword to you. Napoleon is banished to Elba Island. Ghengis goes out fighting. Louis IVX loses his head. Tokugawa commits hare kari etc. It would surely be more satisfying to wipe these guys out.

OK, thats my 10. Love to read your comments good or bad.

Nukes are cool, which is one reason I play custom games with Diplomatic victory turned off (to disable the UN). One of the most enjoyable games I ever had in Civ3 involved an all out nuclear war between two continents. Civ is a game - let's not get too bleeding heart.

    3. Espianage: It says that using spies could lead to war, but I haven't seen it. This should be a big diplomatic boo boo id one of your spies gets caught on foreign soil.
This is already the case. Each time your spy gets caught trying to commit sabotage you get a +1 negative rating in your diplomatic relations. I'm using this right now trying to provoke a war with one of my neighbours (I don't want to get the +3 negative rating "You declared war on my friend" with my other neighbour because I need them friendly until I destroy them). To increase the chances of your spy getting caught commit saboatage in a tile which has one or more enemy units on it.

    5. Spreading Religion: Sending missionaries to spread religion in foreign cites should be frowned upon by the other civs and it should show on the diplomatic screen.

"You are spreading your pagan beliefs in my land!"
Would that mean I could declare war on the United States every time a Jehovah's Witness knocks on my door? Cool!

You can already gift units, but I think they have to be on the other civ's territory. Expanding that idea as you suggest might have merit.

    9. Return of the Palace!
The Palace in Civ3 was just a time waster. A prettier Palace in Civ4 would still be a time waster.

Brilliant. I've wanted to see mercenaries in the game for a while and this may be a viable way of doing it. It may need a new leaderhead characteristic to indicate how likely an AI leader is to offer its army for sale.

I've wanted something like this for a while but my idea would be based on cities with large maintenance costs rebelling instead. It's very difficult to get a city with culture higher than your capital in my experience and on top of that it's not something that happens very often that I'm aware of - New York has never tried to cede from the US. The way I've suggested isn't unusual - US seperating from England.

I'd also include three options to prevent a civil war:
      1) Forbidden Palace creates an Austria-Hungary style government. Effectively nothing changes from the current way the game plays out.
      2) Comonwealth. At any time the player can choose to create a new nation (or nations) from their current empire. The new nation will be fully independent but there will be bonus trade routes between members of the commonwealth.
      3) Puppet state. At any time the player can grant independence to one city or a group of cities. Instead of having bonus trade routes the player can demand tribute to be payed until the new nation can assert its full independence. This option exists mainly for the sake of minor states created far from the capital or so that after wiping out another civ during war the civ can be brought back to life.

          I didn't play Civ 3

But I loved the palace in earlier versions and was pleased to hear that it might be added in a future patch/expansion

Well, I dont see why you can't have the Palace, just have an option to turn it off for those people who aren't interested. I personally dont care either way if its there or not.

And I miss the Civil Wars from Civ 1. If you conquer the capital of a powerful civ, it would split the empire in two. I would wage my entire campaign into just taking the capital.

Hell, that feature might be there, it's just alot harder to take a capital now than it used to be

              That was Civ2, I don't remember this from Civ1

The problem is how much time is spent on making the palace, compared to how much it will add to the game. This time could have been spent using more interesting features

I still remember playing Civ1 on Chieftain when tutorial screen, after meeting most powerful AI civ, would suggest that it would be good idea to take out their capitol so that civil war will emerge are split civ to two.

Or just make it easier, make it possible to agree on solid borders through diplomacy.

Why? If you have theocracy then that's the only reason why people should frown upon it, and in that case it's even impossible.

empire splitting is both civ1 and civ2.
It really sucked and please don't bring it back.

It's an easy win that way. Just go to the capital of your enemy and take it, after that the enemy is toast.

Empire splitting should be a bit more advanced than just taking the capital...
This space is empty... or is it?
