1) Sales sells it, then tells us when they need it by.

2) The rule of thumb for IT is to double the estimate and go to the next unit. If you think it's going to take 2 days, say 4 weeks. Unfortunately, that's probably a realistic estimate, but marketing usually cuts it in half anyway. If it's the first time you've done something (like the SDK) you probably should add some wiggle-room too.

HINT: NEVER give out exact dates. The further out it is, the vaguer your units should be. If it's 6 months away, then you need to talk about which quarter or half of the year it will be in. Slipping from January to April is much worse than slipping from first quarter to second quarter.
