France lost in the six nations today.

          To Scotland.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

            Tell me about it ...

So much about the hype about us having the best european team. And Scotland being one of the weakest.

Our players must have been playing too much civ or something this winter instead of training: they couldn't hold to the ball.

Some will watch out of curiosity. But that may well be the only game they will see in years.

Compared to other mainstream sports (football and rugby), american football does have too many interruptions: 4 hours for just 60 minutes of clock play (and much less of real play) - too boring for most of the audience.

As for myself, it will be neither civ or superbowl, but sleep.

I'll catch the game later, through, cough, alternate broadcast means ;-) (I won't tape the french broadcast, as I can't stand french commentary on US events, I need the real thing).
the most important thing that happened today was the crushing of france by the peoples republic of Scotland

              Oh flower of Scotland.................

:-) ok i'm drunk and happy, let me off

Yes, but you won us at handball today at the final

I've heard , but didn't catch the game.

As Solver said above: "Yes, even French are bound to score sometimes ."

Now, we've covered football, rugby, handball....

Let see, wasn't the original topic about some sort of world championship, tonight?

Ah yes, the Pittsburgh republic versus the island nation of Seattle.

Shoddy reporting by your 'news report'
To be fair, Imran, he just said $18MM contracts, not $18MM/year. Also, a look at the top 10 individual salaries from 2004 shows three QB's (1, 2 and 8), three DL (3, 5, 10) and one OL (7), all of whom are at $11.8MM or above. Of course, this can be misleading due to the way NFL contracts are structured, but I'm too lazy to break down each contract, and it's enough to show that, with the outlying exception of Peyton Manning, the disparity isn't all that wide.

Will any of you other countries of the world be offering up your own contender to challenge tonight's winner? If not, I see no reason tonight's winner shouldn't claim the world's champion title it earns.

Okay, I got the amounts wrong; I'm not even sure there was an amount quoted, just saying that the linemen's weights were blossoming and quoting examples from the Seventies where they were 2/3 the size they are now, for what were then famous games. I have seen other reports that you are right, the linemen are underpaid. The thrust of this article was that their careers were short and becoming shorter and that they faced early death or at least serious health problems post-career if they didn't shear off the weight after they stopped playing. They still make more money than the average American wage-earner, who is also frequently involved in dangerous work (and about 40% of us nationwide, including me, are considered obese. )

As I write this, the actual game is on. I don't imagine this thread will be worth too much after it's over, but I enjoyed starting it and had fun with you all, even the ones who find American sports, "culture" and flag-waving jingoism rather disgusting. We are what we are. Whatever you do tonight, have a pleasant evening and may the best men always win!
You will soon feel the wrath of my myriad swordsmen!

I've been watching a documentary about Chinese Maffia infiltrating in the Belgian soccer teams, bribe a few players here and there (in the lower-region teams) and gain insane amounts on gambling sites.

It was pretty mindshocking to see hundreds of Chinese men at 3 o'clock gambling on the lower regions of our Soccer league. I mean, even over here almost nobody cares about them, but some top online gambling sites noticed total bets on these weak teams were 20 times higher than the bets on the popular top teams (and 90% of these bets had the outcome right).

I've tried to find the documentary online, but can't find it. It's the same people who have ruined some Finnish club and are now starting to work in Greece.

It's on the frontpages of all national newspapers, but I didn't find an english source yet. Sorry.

Well since I'm not American I don't care about some superbowl.
Only football I know and love is the one that Americans call "soccer".

So it's Civ4 all the way...

There's no tackling in Gaelic football so no way can you rank it above Aussie Rules. It's basically basketball except they kick it.

American football is for pussies - look at all that padding! I'd like to see them play AFL...
Hehe. I can't imagine an American football player running a half-marathon each game like Nathan Buckley or James Hird do, much less still being able to play at the end of the game.

That there's obviously a market for it outside the USA. I never commented on the market for any other leagues anywhere in the world; I'm sure there's a market for them as well.
