I am really sorry but this game is overwhelming to me. I'd really like to play it. The manual isn't all that helpful to me. I have done a search of this site for beginners, but all I get is tips. How/where do I go to learn how to play this game or where to start for someone who has no idea how to play it. I'm sure this has been discussed many times but the site is too large and has too many messages for me to find whaty I'm looking for. Sorry, but please help me.

Have you tried the tutorial that comes with the game?

Assuming you've played the tutorial, what exactly don't you understand?

I'd have to second what others said: play the tutorial, it will give you a nice overview on how the game works.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Play the tutorial. It really gives you the basic perspective you need to play the game. Then maybe take another look at the basic rules section of the manual, and then just start a single-player game at the lowest or second-lowest difficulty and see how it goes.

I played it once but will play it again. I thought I read somewhere there was a better guide so I didn't try real hard. Thanks for the input. At least now I havew a direction that I know is worth the time.

There are tons of good guides, but they're generally aimed at higher levels. Some are for the really high levels, some aren't, but those guides assume that you at least have understanding of the basic system - since you're apparently new to Civ games, then you need to play the tutorial and pay attention to it, then play a game of your own to get the sense of what's going on...

Civ can be a bit overwhelming at first if you have no experience with similar games, but it's definitely very rewarding. You should start having fun really soon, and then you can play for years .

Most people here don't know what a newbie should do because they've played older civs so they just jumped right into this one...
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

Nah, actually, most people remember what it's like to be a newbie at Civ. And back then, it was harder to start, as there were no tutorials.

Oh... I must have really bad memory because I started at CivII and I can't remember a thing. I guess I was about 8 when I started playing it.

That would explain it . But you should at least remember the feeling of bewilderment . I know that it's what I remember best from my Civ1 games, bewilderment and confusion... followed by joy and addiction, of course .

What I remember best (from civ 2) was playing as the Russians in the WW2 map and starting with a horde of tanks... on the eastern side of Russia.

That's better than the memories other veterans here have, such as sending a sailship with their glorious Chariots to another continent in Civ1 and being met by Russian Tanks there.

No 'Chariot beats tank' luck there then?

It happened sometimes, but what would it help when you built only 2 Chariots and thought that was the world's mightiest army ?
