    Fascism:

"The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one."

    Hitler.

-It's just so true... Especially when the wonder allowed by fascism is Mt. Rushmore, shows some sense of humor by the creators I guess.

Love the quotes, still have them on, probably won't turn them off .

I remember than when the quotes were first introduced, I thought that a couple were placeholders. "I fooled you, I fooled you" sounded like a placeholder to me until I found out where it's from, and the Sputnik quote I really laughed at .

Mine as well. Nimoy really sells the disgust.

It still amazes me how the two most irritating and tiresome quotes in my eyes, the "beep..." and the "pig iron" ones, can be so popular...

I just wish he'd read the name of the person who said the quote as well (as in SMAC)...

It just sounds funny to me.

I thought my computer was caught in some kind of audio loop the first time I heard sputnik. I wasn't looking at the screen.

By the way, isn't that whole thing that Nimoy reads at the beginning, the orignal text and music from Civ 1?

                        Yes AFAIK
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

While some of the tech quotes are quite elegant others are infuriatingly glib or just plain dumb, and I think this is a bad tendency for a history sim/world-building game like Civilization. I really can't stomach Nimoy quoting Dan Quayle, Velvet Underground, or even Truman Capote; it doesn't ring true. However, I have my favorites:

"I will to my Lord be true and faithful, love all that he loves, and shun all which he shuns." --Feudalism. Nimoy's passion (for Nimoy) speaks true here.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven." --Calander The tranquil wisdom for this tech is quite pleasant.

"Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl." --Artillery. A very dry bit of humor there, perfect for Nimoy's cadence.

Though Nimoy's most impressive has to be Fission:

"If the radience of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One. I am become death, the shatterer of worlds." :b
"I wake. I work. I sleep. I die. The dark of space my only sky. My life is passed, and all I've been will never touch the earth again." --The Ballad of Sky Farm 3, Anonymous, Datalinks

I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I love that one - it's from the Bhagavad Gita.

Robert Oppenheimer actually misquoted when he commented on the a-bomb test - he said "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds"
