  • More Unique than the Next Civ!

Barbarians are more unique than any other civ, mainly due to hating everyone and popping up randomly in fog.

I think they should get a real UU.

This would be most evident on a Terra map, as the barbs actually have plenty of time to build up. My main issue being, barbarians are too easy to kill. I know raging barbs makes them go insane, but it doesn't make them any more technologically advanced, so they stand no chance. The Romans had a devil of a time when they would try and deal with the Germanic 'barbarian' tribes, and I think civIV barbs should also stand a chance.

The UU would, I think, be most appropriate to replace something like the Maceman or a nearby (techwise) unit, because it seems that from the start they just go downhill. I also think that to give them a decent advantage, it should slightly better than your average UU. Here's my suggestion, but I am open to suggestions or ridicule as I am not very experienced with unit or civ balancing.

Maceman Str 8, Move 1, Abilities: +50% vs. Melee Units

Beserker (working name - suggestions?) Str 9, Move 1, Abilities: 1 First Strike, Starts with Woodsman II

I based this just on knowing that the Roman armies were not used to travelling or fighting in forests, so the barbarians often took advantage of them and ambushed them in forested areas. I figured that to ambush, in practicality, they need Woodsman II to be able to move faster and the 1 First Strike represents that they are actually ambushing. Also, I don't know how accurate it is, but in films it tends to be the disciplined army all lines up with their shiny shields and lets the barbarians throw themselves at them, suggesting that the barbarians get the 'first strike' if you will.

My main reason for suggesting this, as I mentioned earlier, is not for accuracy but more to give the poor push-over barbarians a much needed boost, without having to make them raging which, imo, tends to ruin the game.

    Thanks for any feedback!

"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

    No (that's my feedback ).

Barbarians are meant to be a obstacle, not another civ you have constant war with.

Do you have any reason for this other than because?

What I mean is, why should barbarians only be a small obstable and not an actual challenge? I know civ isn't a historical simulator, but barbarians were for a long time more than just an obstacle and several large empires were constantly at war with them.

At the moment it's a case of 'Anything they can build, I can build better'

Because that's the way barbarians are. It's done for gameplay. If they got even more powerful, I'd be likely to simply turn them off. It wouldn't be worth the bother.

You can't build units with bear strength at the beginning of the game (3)

If you have neither chopper nor iron and are playing on marathon, then it's really hard to even stand against the barbarians.

I they found 2 cities near your empire then you can just as well quit the game. There will popup more shortsmen then you can handle with your few bowman. As you fight against barbarians your units wont even get many promotions. Also you don't get any production as the barbars will pillage every 5 turns the your empire. Workman will not be able to rebuild anything as they automatically stop work when an enemy unit approaches so they wont finish anything. Needless to say that you wont be able to build any city improvments nor a settler to get the iron or chopper that you need.

If you stand against them then some other civ that had the chance of being surrounded by other civs and not by fog will come an crush your weakened empire.

Also I don't think that replacing the maceman would change anything because I havn't yet seen such a unit under barbarian command.

According to our history books, it was the so-called 'barbarian' tribes that eventually sacked Rome and vanquished the western Roman Empire.

These tribes (Visigoths, Ostrogoths and Vandals) were not barbarian at all, but were labeled so by the Romans. An example of their exquisite and fine artmanship still stand today as the gothic cathedrals in Europe.

All these 3 tribes came from the far northern reaches of Europe, today called Scandinavia. Visigoths (=Vest gøter), Otrogoths (=Øst gøter) and Vandals were mostly Norwegians, Swedes and Danes.

So.. don't tell me "that's the way barbarians are" - read history and you'll see that the barbarians were powerful nations that more often than not were able to overthrow their so-called 'civilized' opressors.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
