The Danish and Swedish powers of the middle ages had a very marginal impact on history compared to their ancestors. It's the Norsemen of the end of the first millenium that earned the place in history.
I would like to point out that Sweden, under Gustaf II Adolf (aka Gustavus Adolphus) were one of the major players in the thirty years war. Unless I´m mistaken, he actually LED the protestant faction.
Also, at some period in history (hey, I´m no historian), Sweden were the suppliers of the best steel in Europe, exporting to practically everyone.
I may also add that John Ericsson was a swede (The propeller, and of course, the Monitor). And so was Cristopher Polhem. (Who was one of the reasons Sweden did have the best steel.)
And let´s not forget Alfred Nobel. (The Nobel prize, anyone?)
