    I know the original poster expressed a disdain for mountains, but I like picking "rocky" versions of maps. One of my pet peeves are capital cities and cities in general that are surrounded by flatlands and are eternally starved for hammers. Having at least a few hills near every city means you have less of these unproductive towns to deal with, and make for more fun games for me. Rocky maps still have an ample share of good farming tiles around.
