  • Devel's Workshop Idea Thread

    Post 'em if you've got 'em. I've got plenty of ideas of my own, but if there's something you're having trouble working out the particulars of, or if there's a specific something you want to see broken out like we did with the CS Slingshot in the first workshop, post it here and I'll put it on the roster.

    In my head, I see at least the following in the works:

    * The Creative Trait as a weapon

    * Archer rush in action

    * "Imperialst-Style" Conquest in action

    * Oscillating War Example

    * Exploring the Strengths of Horizontal Growth (to mirror the first Workshop's Vertical exploration)

    Others?

    The list of published books grows. If you're curious to see what sort of stories I weave out, head to Amazon.com and do an author search for "Christopher Hartpence." Help support Candle'Bre, a game created by gamers FOR gamers. All proceeds from my published works go directly to the project.

    How about city specialization? Knowing what direction to head into depending on surroundings, resources, etc. At least for me, this is where I am struggling alot, I think, and it's probably what is hurting me the most in my games right now.

      Creating a great GP pump would be a good topic. Creating the perfect money-maker city (Shrine, etc).

      Both are examples of specialization.

      -Arrian

      and then there is the workshop on surviving imperial overstretch...
      grog want tank...Grog Want Tank... GROG WANT TANK!

      The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

              I think diplomacy would be a good one, specifically using diplomacy to achieve your objectives, whether that be staying on good terms with your neighbors or fomenting wars to keep the AI civs busy. I'm not so sure how you could set up the demonstration, though.
              Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

                  Velociryx,about creative trait as weapon,I have a save (Cyrus,noble,huge,pangea,random,begining of turn 1)that I think could be nice exemple for you to try(I did it -with and without early religion,fast and less fast expansion,more peace and more war - always good result,but I´m sure much better could be done).
                  If you are interested I will try send you the file.
                  Best regards,

                    Here are a few

                    “Stuck in the middle” – You are neighbour to all (pref Emperor level where it is going to be very hard to make or stay friends with many)

                    “Resource shortages” – Making a start with a poor location (ie limited resources, food, freshwater etc)

                    I like the “how to make a GP factory” idea though I don’t know if you would play this with Philosophical and up to National Epic.

                      I would love to play more of these games, and would like to lobby for them happening on Epic mode.

                      The stated reason for playing Marathon is that it "puts the mechanics 'out there.'" This is true and obvious, but since Marathon so drastically changes the pulse of the game from Standard because of the relative differences in different aspects' time increases, and the much more dramatic change in unit movement compared to research and army building, it also skews those same mechanics it highlights.

                      In my opinion, Epic will do better to maintain "normal" gameplay while still showing off what's going on by way of the game mechanics.

                      Please consider it.

                      I would love to see a "Plan B" workshop. It would be hard to set up without being a scenario (or just a save at the right moment), but the idea would be that "Plan A" fails and now you're left with a toolkit that's sorely incomplete.

                      It might be hard to make, but there are some sharp minds on these boards.

                        Yeah I'd like some stuff like couerdelion/Fosse said, starts that are hard or not perfectly suited for what you plan on doing, I mean in your first workshop you had corn and gold on a river, awesome starting position, but I wonder how you'd do with a start like this:

                        I think the way I first played this was wrong, maybe a GL fueled start or expanding west very fast coupled with moving my cap is in order. Starting without a good river is a decent disadvantage, no free commerce or easy trade routes.

                        I think that's the weakest part of my game, moving my capital and centering my empire correctly so I can keep a lot of horizontal growth and not get smacked around by the maintenance demon.

                        But I vote for the archer rush, especially the part about keeping the enemies cities and not dying in maintenance.

                          Fosse, I'll take you up on that. The next one I make on my own will be on Epic speed, rather than Marathon (and will likely be the Jag Rush).

                          After I do that one, I'll download Fluke's save shown above and turn it into the next Workshop (three).

                          PS: Fluke...what's the game speed/Dif level?

                            Oh, it's on Normal speed, Pangaea, normal size and Emperor, so you might notice huge AI scores and stuff, hehe. The only good thing about this map is that I border on passive civs so you don't need to worry about being invaded. GL strat isn't working out much better hmmmm.

                            I can randomly make some monarch maps and try to get a similar one as I do think monarch is the best for learning/teaching.
