Weird coincidence or fate?

When I signed up on these forums, the name I usually use (Satyr) was already taken. Out of the blue I chose a new name I had never used before. I have no idea where I came up with the idea. I certainly had no notion that there had ever been a Sid game called 'Crossfire'! How strange is that?! Maybe I was destined to play Sid games from birth?

Oh yeah, I found out there was such a game by Googling Velociryx, wondering if there was some other meaning to the word.

Civ starts what is now called the 4x games. Even the Europa Universalis series of games is vaguely that way.

Yeah, there have been loads of great games in the foot steps of Civ. SMAC/X obviously is one of the greater, but if I were to recommend one other than those of Sid Meier, it would have to be my favourite game of all time together with Civ, Europa Universalis 2.

SMAC/X was my favorite Civ game before Civ4. It was just a wonderful synergy of 4x games and great storytelling . Good fun.

Indeed. It was through SMAC/X that I got really into Civ. Before that, when Civ2 came out, I was too young to understand all the complexities I think, and besides I didn't have a computer at home. But when I got SMAC/X, I soon found Civ1 on the net and was totally hooked! Then soon came Civ2 into my home, together with Civ3 and now Civ4.

I never actually played Civ1 (BLASPHEMY, I know ). I found Civ with Civ2 and actually ended up buying it on the first day it came out. I was going to buy CivNet when I saw a empty Civ2 box with "Coming Soon" on it.

I didn't like Civ3.

SMAC, though... I'm always a big fan of immersiveness in games. I want things to draw you into the world. SMAC was perfect for me. And I was happy when Civ4 started taking some of those immersive things (like voice narration when researching techs). It's also why I don't complain about Civ4's graphics as much. It draws me in, and I remember all the complaints about SMAC's graphics .

Yeah, nice colour scheme and all

I particularly like the symbols they have for various teches. Simple, maybe even a bit crude, but have an elagance to them. And very stylish, too.

When I first saw this thread I thought of a very old Apple II game called Crossfire. In this game you ran around a 2-d Grid and enemies would shoot at you down both vertical and horizontal corridors at the same time. It did not seem like a Sid game.

Of course, you guys were talking about the SMAC sequel called Alien Crossfire.

It was not a sequel. It was an expansion pack.

It also just had so many unique features which couldn't really be added into 'historical' civ games as they wouldn't make sense unless in a futuristic setting. Things such as trading other players for Comm Frequencies you don't have or building cities in the sea.
