Gaining techs through military force - bad idea

I can see your arguments why capturing a capital/major city could allow you to capture some research details (at least after writing ) but for me this would unbalance the game a little. In some areas, realism can severely affect the gameplay and if we were to be totally realistic, we would not have every city losing practically all of its key buildings when captured. Perhaps my army might eat all the food in the city but would they completely destroy the system of collecting and storing it (granary). Would we always destroy the courthouse, forge, library etc? The fact that little remains is simply to stop us gaining things too cheaply.

If anyone played EU then you’ll know the old early game strategy was simply to declare war on Portugal, capture Lisbon and their maps. They do the exploration you just steal the details. It was too easy really and a much abused flaw.
