If not Vikings, then I'd prefer the name "Norse". "Scandinavians" would be horrible, however.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I love using cities as one-tile canals, personally. :-)

Norse is definitely better than Scandanavians.
But then again, I'd love to a civ named "Pirates!" Yaaaar...

I'd love to see the surrender option for AIs, modeled after SMAC.

The AI, when it knows it's beaten, will be able to surrender. It gets a permanent alliance with the aggresor. Permanent Alliances in this game would be the perfect model for surrender - between two AIs they work together - and between player and AI the player can boss them around in all sorts of ways (or help them out). A flag on the Surrender relationship will prevent the two sides from sharing in any victory conditions, as a true permanent alliance allows.

AIs could also, of course, surrender to one another as well.

              - Well, for starters, I believe that the Portuguese people deserve to be represented in this game. There was a time, a long, long time ago (eheh) late XV, XVI and early XVII centuries when Portugal divided the World with Spain, an agreement known as the Tordesillas pact, recognized by the Pope. It literaly divided the World in two spheres of influence. The Spanish and the Portuguese. I´m not being patriotic. I´m being realistic. And if the Mali deserve a recognition, Portugal sure as hell deserves one! We had Magalhães, the first man to go around the World, we discovered Brasil, the maritime route to India, we sold the first firearms in Japan, we spread the Christian religion in the 4 corners of the World. We have with England, the oldest aliance in the World. Also have one of the most widely spoken languages: The Portuguese!

              - Also, I´d boost the spy unit. It´s very limited of actions. It should be able to destroy specific buildings in cities, to incite a revolt, to steal money, to steal technolgies and so on... Allthough in the hands of a cunning AI it could prove disastrous!

              - The Caravel unit should have a cargo capacity that would allow to move armys in it. It would also make you have to think about a decent navy early in the game.

This what I come up right know!

              Best Regards!

Damn, I love that idea! That would be great! And that would be very realistic indeed! If we recall France´s "official" roll (Vichy) in WW2!

                  Religious Victory

                  Inquisitors to remove non-state religions.

Also: Missionaries should be like spies and able to move across borders without starting wars. See also: China/Japan in the early colonial period.

Can you tell I'd like to see the religious aspects of the game expanded?

Bring back patrols! I thought that was a very useful feature in SMAC, and I've missed it ever since.

Also, I'd like to see the Diplomat unit brought back as an early spy and then as stated above, have the spy get increased abilities.

@Blake: I like your 'fair borders' idea - I dont think William is understanding it or something, it would be a simple deal just a open borders is, and can be cancelled at any time. I doubt the AI would go for the deal especially if they had to give up any resources that would get taken in the deal, unless of course they gain one of their own somwhere else along your border.

As for the Viking ship in the OP, I think that would be grossly unbalanced, especially in epic/marathopn games where its takes a looong time to go from sailing (galley) to optics? [or is it astronomy](galleon) So for like 100 game turns the Vikings would be stealing all the good spots on islands in which nobody else could get to. I would say giving them a new boat that can transport 3 military units (only) across ocean squares might be better.

Eh... that UU would be grossly UNDERpowered.

Underpowered in a Pangea map, and arguably continents, but very, very powerful in anything Archipeligo. Like in an inverse Quecha or something.

I do think a berserker unit would be more generally useful, replacing an axeman or a swordsman or something.
