  • My Absense of late....

I've seen a few threads with questions asked directly of me, and I've seen other "Game Doctor" questions that I've been itching to have a go at answering, but at this time, I am unable to do so.

The Candle'Bre crew has been informed of the latest, so I'll copy and paste the information that my wife posted on that forum here, as a means of explanation.

Many of you know that I'm....shall we say...."not in the best of health," and here lately, that has degraded another notch. I'm home from the hospital now, but on near-complete bed rest, and unable to participate as fully as I would like in these discussions.

Nonetheless, I have every confidence that the other voices here...the other folks who contribute so much to these forums, will be more than capable of making up for whatever my voice contributes, and my hope is that I'll be able to resume a more active participation in the forums as time heals this latest wound.

Posted by my wife, on 1-14-06, in the Candle'Bre private forum:

    Hi guys,

I need to let you in on the latest. Let's see....

Sunday, the 8th, Chris and I went to walk the dogs. We didn't get very far down our street when he started complaining of chest pain. He keep grabbing his chest and was having trouble breathing. We finished the walk.

He rested, and wanted to go again, with out the dogs, to pay attention to what was really hurting and how. And, as predicted, the second time was worse.

The next day he wanted to try again. Convinced that exercise was all that was needed. He stopped several times, and almost fell a couple times.

Finally scared, he was convinced to call his doctor and move his appointment from mid February to sometime sooner. Upon hearing the description of the pain the doctor called him in ASAP.

They ran some tests and an EKG and sent him back to work. That was Tuesday. The Doctor set up and appointment on Thursday to have a stress test done.

In the mean time he is getting worse. Just coming up stairs leaves him in pain and winded.

We took Thursday off cause they told us the stress test would talk all day. He couldn't finish the treadmill part. They took another EKG that also came back normal. We were told 7 to 10 days for results. They called us back a few hours later the same day, to tell us the images showed a blockage and they set up an apointment with a heart speacialist today, Friday the 13th, at 11:30.

Yet another EKG was done and yet again came back normal. So the doc hadn't seen the images from the stress test and wasn't really aware of anything. So we tell him and he wants to schedule a heart catheratization for Tuesday.

At this point I am getting aggravated. I see him everyday. He was getting worse. He was hurting while we were in the office right then. So he told the Doctor that he was hurting now. So they did yet another EKG and had the stress test results sent to the ASAP and sure enough they were abnormal and he was admitted to the hospital at about 2 o'clock. He was sent straight to the cath lab where they went in to take pics. (Pics to follow) And if something was found they were going to fix it right then.

They found something. Somthing that was reffered to as a plaque rupture. Plaque in your arteries is like the buildup on your teeth. Apparently that goop ruptured and got all over everywhere and clogged up two different places that kind of branch off.

They placed two stints in those and ballooned another place.

He is out of surgery now and is doing really well. He should come home tomorrow. He will be out from work at least a week. And I couldn't tell you when he will be back up on these forums. Mostly cause I don't know when he will be able to climb the stairs.

Anyway, when I left the hospital, he was in real good spirts and asked that I let you guys know!

    I will keep you posted.
    Christina

    ****More from Christina****

This first one is before the stints. In the circle you can see where some arteries kind of go but there are white area's there that make it kind of fuzzy.

It will make more sense when you see the after shot.

      ****And again, from Christina****

Now in the circle you can see very defined dark lines of what the arteries look like when they are clean and free to flow!

The surgeon, said that it was really bad. That Chris could have dropped dead at any second.

Guess my old man is just to stubborn to quit!

****Last Update from Christina - posted the day of my return home****

        I just brought him home!!!!

At the time, he wanted to keep it just with the candle bre team. The Doc said he should do ok on stairs. So I figure he will venture up here tomorrow and I will let him tell his story his way to whom he choses.

Did learn though, that the plaque rupture I mentioned.... Yeah, when it ruptured and kind of threw the goop all over, the Doc said he was blessed cause it really should have ruptured the whole front wall of his heart. And with all the walking he insisted and and bad as it was hurting, he is a walking miracle!

        *****

And my report to the Candle'Bre team, the following day:

        I have defeated the stairs!

Sorta walking on eggshells at present, cos they told me to be VERY careful with the leg (that's how they got to the heart, via the artery in the leg, so I've got a hole there about the size that a .22 caliber bullet would make, and they said that if I'm not careful with it over the next week, I could re-open the wound and bleed out before I could call for help, so...there's that.

As to the heart itself....wow, it feels like a brand new one! I can't remember when I was breathing this easy or had this much energy (which sucks, because of the aforementioned leg issue, and the fact that I feel as though I've been run over by a glass-bottomed truck, and then backed over again so the driver/passengers could all have a good look thru the floorboard...shooooot....aching in places I didn't know you COULD ache!)

Looks like I used another one of my nine lives though...starting to run thin on them...better save the rest!

        -=Vel=-

Anyways, just wanted to let everyone here know WHY I've not been around much lately, and I'll be returning to active duty as health permits!

          Get well, Vel!

Lesson for all the kiddies, when something feels wrong you need to go to a doctor asap, you can't walk off a clogged artery.

              Vel,

I did not know about your condition before now, and I am saddened to hear about it.

I know I speak for everyone on the forums when I say: best of luck to you (if you don't believe in luck, sheer determination is often a good subsitute!).

Your dedication to these forums is simply amazing.

I will endeavour to answer all Vel-marked Civ4 questions in your absence (I hope it's short: I doubt I can deliver the goods like you can!).

                Oh, Jesus Vel...

Somebody up there seems to be doing their best to really mess you life up...

I hope you recover swiftly and that you don't exert yourself while you are healing.

                      Vel,

my best wishes for a swift and thorough recovery. Please take good care of yourself and take your time. I think we can tell by now that Civ4 will have an impressive shelf life, so there's no reason to hurry.

Having said that, even your temporary absence will be felt. (When I saw that your main strategy thread had dropped to page 2, I had a moment of sympathy as I imagined you covered in paperwork because of a passing comment you had made about a busy time at work. Little did I know that the reason was so serious.) You are - to pick up an expression your wife used - a walking miracle in more than one sense, and we want to keep it that way.

                      With best wishes,
                      Verrucosus

Wow. Try not to die on us, ok? That would suck.[/understatement] You appear difficult to kill, thankfully. Those two pictures are amazing!

The upside, I hope, is that now that the plaque issue is fixed, given some R&R, you will be better going forward. I hope all goes smoothly with your recovery!
