You don't just need to have World Wonders to get Great People. You can generate points just by having Specialists in your city, like Priests, Scientists etc. Just add the building that allows them.

Great Scientists create Academies. If I feel I have no more good sites for Academies I might settle a GS in my best science city or save it for a golden age.

Great Priests found holy shrines & settle in that same city as super specialists. That city is gonna pay for my empire (wall street later).

Great Merchants get settled in my holy city/wall street city.

Great Engineers either rush a wonder or settle in my capital (typically running Bureacracy).

Great Artists... ah, that depends. I often settle them in key border cities rather than using the great work - +12 cpt, modified by things like cathedral-type buildings and the hermitage can create a steady culture creep that is (I think) more effective than the "boom" event. Plus you get +3 gpt out of that. There is a time and a place for the culture bomb, though.

I typically don't use GP on GAs, but I will occasionally do it once (when it costs 2 GPs).

Is there a difference where the resource is, inside the radius or not? I thought that as long as the resource is inside the cultural borders and connected by a road to the city is can be fully exploited (and if the other cities are connected to the first city they also get access to the resource in question) ?

Well, first off coal & iron have no effect on the Heroic Epic or West Point. It's the Ironworks. And yes, I believe it's just access to those materials in your trade network, not having them inside the fat cross of the city in question. I could be wrong, since I never actually checked that myself.

HE + West Point is good. So is West Point + Red Cross.

I rush bought them in that city because coal and iron are worth anvils, not just hammers . Add in a few more mines, workshops and just enough food to work it all, and you have a hammer heavy unit building monster.

Not for the Ironworks. There has to be either Coal or Iron within the city radius in order to build it.

Ironworks only cares about the presence of iron/coal in your trade network. It doesn't need to be inside the city radius. I know this because I often build the Ironworks in a reclaimed-jungle city (watermills and workshops), those cities often have no resources at all.

Are you sure about that? Alot of times it will come up but in some cities the icon to build it is greyed out. Is there some building that has to be in place first?

                    Ironworks needs building?

I'm pretty sure a Forge is needed.

Hi guys, this is my first post in here.

I've been playing it a lot since I bought it and I noticed that as long as the resource is in your cultural border and it is connected, you can gain access to it !!

I usually use GP as Super Specialists, except for GS an G Propeths (Academy and Holy City)

Well that could explain it. Nice to know, I though I was limited as to where it could go.

Ironworks requires a forge in the city in question, and a certain number of forges empire wide before it can be built. It's 6 on a standard map, 7 on a large and 8 on a huge map, but I am not sure about the tiny or duel maps.

For Duel maps, it's 4, I believe. Playing on a Duel map with all 18 civs, it's real tough to get some of those national wonders, particular if you're playing a peaceful kinda game.

are there even 18 land squares for 18 civs on a duel map? heh

                                Willem,

I'm almost positive that you do not need iron+coal inside the city radius to build the Ironworks. 99.99% sure. I aim to build it in my capital most of the time (bureacracy bonus + ironworks = ), and I know I don't often have iron and coal in my capital radius.

edit: just noticed Blake's post. Exactly. Iron & Coal in your trade network are all that is needed.
