Supposedly the first Reich started with Charlemagne's empire with its capital at Aachen (a nice little place to visit, BTW). While I do not advocate removing the German CIV, I was merely lending some support to adding a Polish one, if possible.

Beep, they spoke "germanic" in rural regions, main language actually being.... vulgar latin- just like in case of majority of European countries.

First Reich was more universalistic idea, not bounded to one nation, mainly because there was no such a concept as "the nation" until the Renaissance, and actually XIX century.

We just tend to think of our ancestors' ways of thinking in our own categories.

Medieval Europe was much more culturally unified than nowadays.

BTW, Swedish invaded Poland in XVII century. Mostly Musketmen and Cavalry. They took almost whole country but couldn't afford keeping it. Option "Don't allow city razing" was switched on. Instead they destroyed almost every historical castle here (they had small defense value, ca. +25% but were future tourist attraction). This was Civ3-like scenario because many Guerilla units spawned in Poland and Swedish were forced to withdraw - mostly because nothing left to pillage.

Our history books also mention the Battle of Kirchholm (1605) where 2 Polish Musketmen and 2 Hussaria (Polish UU = Cavalry) units destroyed 14 Swedish units (4000 vs 14000). Swedish didn't notice that Hussaria had "200% vs Swedish" bonus
Despite our UU's enemies always had more shields/hammers and outnumbered us with units.

While I believe that the Polish should be included in Civilization, there remains the unfortunate fact that the residue of once virulent anti-Polish thought in the US is simply the belief that Poland is insignificant. Poland is a unique, curious, and vibrant civilization, but one that is grossly undervalued. However, this is Poland's own choice - being stubbornly Catholic. Geographically, Poland is a prong sticking out of Catholic Europe and finds itself precariously between German Protestants and Russian Orthodox! That is not exactly a safe harbor for Catholicism, although Poland is certainly in ascendency for the moment...

There is high cultural pressure to Poland from both sides. Even some ppl here think part of Poland (Silesia) wants to culturally flip to Germany! To avoid this we've choosen a strategy to build many Temples and Cathedrals. Having Christianity as national religion Cathedrals give us huge cultural bonus (vide Czestochowa cathedral, etc.).
Remember we "had" Christian holy city of Vaticano and with John Paul II great prophet we had both lines of sight around half of the world and huge cultural (political PR) boost. After JPII death I see our Civ-points graph also became flat.

Now our new government wants to switch to Organized Religion (+25% production) - this is not too bad choice as there are almost no other religions here - so Free Religion has no advantages and "we're brothers and sisters in faith" still works nowadays

Also Temples give us happy faces - today Hit Singles, Hit Movies and Hit Musicals from Roosevelt cannot be simply exchanged for Copper and Coal
Some people believe there are White Bears walking on our streets - but that's not luxury resource so far - we're working to make it Hit Thing To See!
