    1) I had not yet seen this formula before. I think 11 axemen should do the trick, provided you beat his city defences down with catapults first. You don't need many for this - but the more you have the faster you can do it. At least 3 would be recommended.

That's already a pretty big invasion fleet. But the bright side is that you can use it to take that barb city - and the other french cities as well.

    2) He doesn't really have time to upgrade his defences. You keep a ship next to Paris while building army, then declare war (ship will be automoved then) while your fleet is as close to paris as possible. You can land at the hills south of paris the very first turn of the war - and take the city over the next couple of turns.

    3) I think the Colussus is more important right now.

    4) I'd save him for Paris I think.

    5) They will not touch, since they can't go more than 1 tile into the ocean, but you *will* be able to cross. So that's an important goal to achieve. You could consider building a theatre immidiately after you finish your lighthouse, and then build culture for a while. Or you could work all the coastal tiles for a few turns while you switch your slider to 80% culture - that delays your entire civ, but will expand Canterbury in 2-3 turns.

    6) No. You want an invasion fleet for Paris anyway, so start building troops everywhere. As soon as you have enough troops, attack Olmec. If you manage to expand Canterybury before that, so much the better.

    7) There's a few forests outside any city's fat cross that can be chopped without any penalties. Doing so wouldn't hurt. I usually do not chop forests within my cities' fat cross, but opinions on that differ.

      Now, Lords, for France!

I'm delighted to report that Paris (including the Pyramids and Chichen Itza) is now under English control.

I intended to follow Diadem's recommendations as closely as I could, but Napoleon again forced me to depart slightly from the script by declaring war on me in 660 AD. Two of his archers made it to the outskirts of York, but they were quickly defeated by newly trained axemen. He didn't send any more galleys, perhaps because I used my caravels to patrol the coast.

Because I was afraid that he might strengthen his garrisons I decided to leave Olmec alone (the second half of my attack force was ready before I could have shipped the first half to Olmec and back) and attack Paris first. In the end I lacked one galley, so I went in with just nine axemen and three catapults, but luckily Napoleon had shifted part of his capital garrison to Orleans, so it worked out. I still lost one catapult and an axeman, but I got his capital and the Pyramids, so there's little to complain about.

Some important decisions both on the tactical (mopping up France) and strategic level (civics/Olmec) are coming up and Canterbury will probably cause tensions in the future, but I think the most critical decisions in this game were those that we have discussed in this thread. By having had to put my own plans in writing in order to provoke your comments and then adapting them to your suggestions, I've made those decisions much more consciously than I usually do. I've really enjoyed that, so I'd like to thank everyone (particularly those who took the trouble to look into the savefiles) for putting their mind into this game. Your comments were much appreciated.

My Stack of Doom (tm) for invasion would include the following, liberally pop-rushed:
7 Catapults (Bombard anything to 0 in one turn)
n Defense units for your Catapult attack team
I prefer having the same number of defenders for my Cats as the enemy has in their base, but half the base's defenders go Kamikaze at you when they see the big phat stack o cats taking their defense bonus to 0.

With the right promotions (Barracks + Vassalage, Barracks + Theo, Barracks + Agressive give you 2), you can make a lot of different specialised defenders against various attack types. Without Siege, your opponent is doomed.
This exploits the AI's tendency not to build catapults, but if you get a gimme, take the gimme.
