  • Merry Christmas to me!

I finally scraped together enough money to get my copy of Civ 4 today. I haven't gone very far into it yet, I'm just playing on Settler and have only played up until the Classic era, but I'm liking what I see so far.

I'm playing a huge map with graphic detail set to low with low resolution textures and a 16 bit display resolution. I'm noticing some lag when I turn on/off the tile grid and going into the Military Advisor but other than that the game is running fine.

One thing I'm noticing though is that there's definitely room for improvement as far as in-game info is concerned. For example, if I roll over a terrain tile and see that I can build a Pasture, I'd like to be able to click somewhere to bring up an entry for that improvement. Instead I have to call up the Civilopedia, then hunt around through various icons to find what I want.

So being new to the game, I'd appreciate any tips anyone has to offer. I can see I have a bit of a learning curve ahead of me.

The Manual and Civopedia are poorly written.
    Some knowledge you could use:
    1. Space elevator can only be built within 30 degrees of latitude of the equator
    2. Only Mines that you are working have a chance to discover a new mineral.

Also if the poor civilopedia is as significant a problem for you as most people, then try getting Sevo's 'Sevopedia' mod:

Sevopedia ver 1.93 (Scroll down to second post for latest screenshots!) Version 1.92 -- Added history to unit page Version 1.93 -- Fixed project page text error - Compatible with Civ4 version 1.52 - Includes all 1.52 vanilla pedia upgrades - Multiple interface enhancements - Includes...

      It really is significantly better.
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

Cool, thanks. I'll be sure to check it out. I certainly hope they make some major improvements on it soon, it makes that much harder to try and learn the game.

Another problem I just noticed, even though I had researched Archery the graphic hadn't changed colour to indicate that I had.

You sure do have to watch out for those Barbarians on Raging don't you? I was getting a steady stream of them coming at my cities before I ended the last game. Obviously I'll have to build up my military more than I have been.

Look for a barbarian city If the fog of war is large enough and noone move there a lot, you can be sure there is one out there pumping out units coming for you

btw, welcome to the Civ4-club! It's a nice game, making you waste countless hours by the computer

As I´ve said before, the civiliopedia is a disgrace and a stain on an otherwise great game. A resonably intelligent chimp could´ve made a better job than this, but I´m assuming it looks the way it looks due to time constraint and not because someone actually wants it to look like that. I´m guessing this will be fixed in a patch or at the very least in an upcoming expansion.

In any case merry christmas Willem and happy gaming

Well I'm pretty impressed by what I've seen so far. I really like the promotions thing for units, it puts strategy back into the game. You can really have a combined arms thing going.

BTW, I understand you can set up rally points for cities, but I can't figure out how to do it. What's the catch?

I think you have to click on the city name on the main screen, then hit shift-right click on the space where you want the rally point. Should show up on the map as a yellow circle. Merry Christmas and welcome to the club!
